Do you really think they wouldn't have a warrant? There was a whole trial over this involving several kids.

Step2: throw the remains of the phone into a wood chipper.
Step3: throw the wood chipper results into a flowing river, the Mississippi perhaps...

Step 4: hope that you never agreed to backup your phone to the cloud

Step 5: destroy Alexa and hope that you never said anything in front of her (who is listening 24/7)

Too many people in this thread missing the bigger issue.

When the FBI has a warrant to search your house, they don't make the builder give them a key. If they have a warrant to search your car, they don't make Toyota unlock it. If they have a warrant to search your safe, they don't make Hamilton give them a universal code.

And this is basically what they have made Apple do. They either provided them the phone's individual passcode or they provided a universal one, because I know there is no way in hell the FBI cracked the phone's encryption.

Either way, all iOS users are fricked.

Too bad. Don’t get involved in another’s death and you won’t have to worry about your personal information.

Why wouldn’t you smash your phone with a sledgehammer and chunk it into the MS river and say you lost it?

Kinda hard to do that when you’re dead.

Eta: I thought this was the deceased person’s phone they were talking about.

There was a recent segment on 60 mins about this. There is software called Pegasus created by an Israelian and it is sold to governments, law enforcement. etc.

LINK

I don't have a problem with them being able to get into someone's phone. If they are stupid enough to discuss it over text or leave any kind of trail on their phone, that could help solve a crime then why not?

Get burner phones. If your iphone doesn't have information that is of value then there is nothing to worry about.

They finally guessed his passcode

There are so many times they can guess and get it wrong before it will not allow someone to keep trying.

McLindon said the issue “is not about one person’s cell phone” but rather Fifth Amendment privacy rights.

...except they had a search warrant

Yeah I don’t have a problem with this and I don’t think anybody with common sense would either. The govt had a search warrant and while I agree that he doesn’t have to give up his password, the govt Can use whatever means necessary to gain access.

Then enlighten me, because the article doesn't say and I seriously doubt the FBI cracked the phone's encryption.

The problem happens when they use the warrant to try and force people to unlock their phones (fifth amendment and all). If the cops unlock it, no fifth amendment violation occurs.

Another issue is that the cops need to list specifically what they're looking for on the warrant. They can't just write "the phone and it's contents"

I'm pretty sure if someone died under my "watch"/hazing , there wouldn't be a cell phone left. That bitch gets toasted and I go buy a burner immediately and call no one but a lawyer.

Without a warrant?

Would you like if police could just enter your home anytime they felt like it?
