The Capital Area Transit System board and Metro Council will each take up a cooperative endeavor agreement between CATS and the city-parish that’s needed in order for Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s proposed 10-mile express bus route to move forward.
Under the agreement, CATS and the city-parish will each pay half of a $440,000 fee to HNTB, the firm designing the bus rapid transit line.
East Baton Rouge Parish Redevelopment Authority CEO Chris Tyson is hopeful both groups will approve financing for the project. The CATS board is expected to vote on the agreement this evening, while the Metro Council will take it up Wednesday.
“We’ve discussed this pretty extensively over the past few months,” Tyson says. “This is just one step. There are many more.”
The Federal Transit Administration has agreed to match city-parish funds for a 3-mile tram connecting downtown to LSU. However, since Broome redefined the project to include a bus rapid transit line instead, it will have to be vetted again by the FTA. The cooperative endeavor agreement is a first step to regaining FTA approval.
Why would they consider a route between north Baton Rouge and LSU?
Seems like an express route from the places where employees actually live to employment centers (LSU, downtown, OLOL, Exxon, etc.) would make more sense.
quote:
Upon completion, the transit line is estimated to cost somewhere between $40 million and $50 million. Based on what other cities across the world have paid for similar systems, Tyson calls the estimate a “back-of-the-envelope cost per mile of building the average bus rapid transit system.” CATS Communications Director Amie McNaylor says some costs on CATS’ end include $800,000 for three electric buses, as well as additional dollars for enhanced shelter stations and digital kiosks, the latter of which won’t roll out until after early fall 2019, once the first phase of the project is expected to be complete.
$50 million for a non-stop bus route. WTF. The tram route between LSU and Downtown doesn't look so bad anymore.
And why do they need to spend $800,000 on electric buses when they have a fleet of diesel-electric buses that are barely being used???
CATS ridership has actually declined since they got a dedicated stream of tax dollars. They aren't reducing traffic in Baton Rouge at all.

Downtown to LSU is only like $6 via Urber.
Wanting to start a thread on here for a long time concerning the fact that I've never seen more than 5 passengers on any Baton Rouge area bus. ever.

CATS has been losing riders since they got more tax dollars.
They provide next to zero value to the taxpayers, and this is in a town large enough to support a bus service that didn't suck.

How is that possible? They went from 2 people on each bus to 1?
Cats is such a shitshow. Should be eradicated and the busses sold to the highest bidder to try and recoup some money.

Do you want honesty or some fabricated BS answer? The honest answer is because the proposed Downtown/LSU route didn't cater to black people. That's it. That's the answer. Thus, there had to be something added on to cater to NBR even if there is ZERO demand for such project and a colossal waste of public funds.
To be fair, the Downtown/LSU tram is probably unnecessary as well. But at least you could argue that was connecting two of the biggest hubs of research/business/production/commerce in the city. However, the is literally NO DEMAND for an express route between LSU and North Baton Rouge. None! Nor will there ever be.
I imagine many posters on here attended LSU. How many times in your college career was there a need to get to NBR from LSU? And even if so, how difficult was it to get there in an automobile?
Accept it. This is the future of BR. Those with a sense of logic and fiscal responsibility need not apply

Let's see if anyone on the Metro Council has the stones to reject this nonsense. My guess is that Barb is an unequivocal yes and Loup will be absent.

CATS needs to fund the express line. That's their gig. Why is the CP having to give them more money?
And HNTB must love EBR.

Voters gave them a large property tax millage and their revenue stream increased 7-8 million dollars a year, but they LOST riders!!!!!!
They have the money. They have big, unoccupied busses rolling around the parish. Why give em more money?

Get ready for many more CATS and COA boondoggles. It’s the political reality of BR’s demographics.
