I read an obituary the other day about a guy who was a Catholic in good standing; the funeral was held at a Catholic church, etc. The obituary also stated that he was a Mason. I always thought Catholics were forbidden to join the Masons on pain of excommunication. Any Catholic and/or Masonic OTers have insight?

I don't see why Catholics can't lay bricks.

If Henry VIII was pissed at me for being Catholic, I’d be shitting bricks.

Catholics are not supposed to join the Masons

In 1983, Pope John Paul II wrote:
quote:

The Church’s negative position on Masonic association … remains unaltered, since their principles have always been regarded as irreconcilable with the Church’s doctrine. Hence, joining them remains prohibited by the Church. Catholics enrolled in masonic associations are involved in serious sin and may not approach Holy Communion. (November 26, 1983)

I've known a Catholic who was also a Mason. He was a miserable old bastard. His funeral was the first Catholic funeral I'd ever been to. When they started burning the incense around him I asked my uncle if they were smoking him up and getting him ready for where he was going.

This is a topic that would take hours and hours of study, using books you can't find.

I would suggest you listen to 50 hours of William Cooper's mystery Babylon if you really want answers. It's not something that can be explained in an OT post.

It depends. A bishop has to go through with excommunication; maybe no bishop ever wanted to bother. Maybe he stopped going to mass, but a priest still gave him a Catholic funeral because the wife or family is Catholic. It's not like some bolt comes out or the sky when he became a Mason. It all depends on the local priest and the bishop.

That is still true, though it's rarely enforced through ex-communication. In today's church, it is much more like "the church frowns upon membership in the Mason's.

I'm guessing the Knights of Columbus don't like the competition.

The two are not compatible. But there’s a lot of ignorant but well intentioned Catholics too.

Basically Masons hold beliefs that would be considered heterodox to an orthodox Catholic. How many Masons still believe in the “mysteries” of the organization, that I can’t tell you. But yeah, Masonry is stigmatized by the RCC.

But they covered up the molestation of little boys, so pick your poison
