Invasive ‘Northern Snakehead’ fish found in Louisiana

LINK
Northern Snakeheads, a non-native species of fish native to Asia, have been spotted in Louisiana’s Old River in Minorica, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

The presence of two adult Northern Snakeheads and a cluster of fry was reportedly captured on video.

These highly predatory fish pose a threat to native species as they can outcompete and prey upon them. While LDWF says it will closely monitor the situation, it does not anticipate major impacts on native fish populations, as snakeheads reproduce at a slower rate compared to other invasive species.

In the event of catching a Northern Snakehead, anglers are advised not to release it back into the water. Instead, they should take a side view photo, kill the fish, double bag it, freeze it, and contact LDWF’s Aquatic Invasive Species Hotline for further instructions at (225) 765-3977 or AquaticInvasives@wlf.la.gov.

Those bastards can crawl through mud over land from one body of water to another.

Kill them with fire.

About 10 years ago we found one up in central Il. Those things can survive out of water for a real long time and can walk on their fins from stream to pond.

They are supposed to be fun to catch, aggressive and fight like crazy. Watched a guy on YouTube catching em in Florida.

It kinda looks like a catfish and a Choupique had a bastard child.

I was in Ohio recently, stopped at a fish store to check out some saltwater stuff. It was odd to see snakeheads, gar and piranhas for sale?

Are catfish really that much more "sanitary"? Plus, there is a market here for Choupique caviar.

Point being, I don't know if snakehead will really be the line of demarcation for those who aren't afraid to eat just about anything they pull out of a lake, river, bayou here.

Naw, looks like a snake and a catfish had a bastard child. Nasty frickers even have markings like a snake.

They are delicious and a fun fish to catch. Very aggressive and will strike hard. Unfortunately they have big appetites and they will reduce the native fish populations.
