Has anyone had any experience purchasing a vehicle from a Carmax dealership? They’re sheer inventory is a plus. They claim no haggle pricing. Have you found that to be accurate?

I've sold two cars to them and the experience was a positive one. Fair prices and easy transactions. I haven't bought from them but I would imagine it to be the same experience.

Doesn’t this just mean “you pay sticker price”?

Saturn tried this. It didn’t work out for them.

But I have no experience with Carmax.

It's no haggle because it's not the best deal you could get. If you aren't comfortable negotiating, it's an ok price. But the internet has really made the car buying process easier.

Saturn had some other issues, however they did have the best customer satisfaction with dealer experience as I recall.

You could do better price wise usually when effort and haggling, but you're paying a bit extra to not. Very easy experience the time I did it. They also will ship cars in from other locations for you.

You pay what is on the sticker. No exceptions.

The prices that they have listed are at Blue Book values. I wouldn't let them work on the cars and apparently they sell way more cars than they are able to service. There's an back log to get a car repaired if any are needed and you would have to have an appointment for that as well.

What they sell are not bad vehicles and extremely low mileage fleet cars.

I've sold 3 cars and bought 3 vehicles through them. Always been the easiest experience, plus they'll more than likely ship for free even if it says you have to pay (within 200 or so miles). When it says you have to pay, they likely don't have the title in store. That's what my last dealer said. If you go and say you want the vehicle and are ready to purchase it, they'll get it to you no charge. Servicing sucks a little because most departments are closed on the weekend, but it's a plus that you get to take a day off work; I lose no pay because I'm military. I've been happy with them though, always give me more than I'm expecting on trade ins.

They bought my car for a reasonable price, and sold me one for an acceptable price. Didn't have to drive to Houston and spend what little free time I have negotiating a slightly better deal on the specific car I was looking for.
The experience was painless. Would recommend.

I looked at one of their cars about 10 years ago.

They moved it to a closer location without my asking for that, then refused to come down on the price when I showed them a bunch of rock chips in the paint, then blamed me for them moving the car.

As long as you think the price is about right, which typically it's decent on some of them and shite on others, then it's a good experience. I was in and out and sold my old vehicle for 1000 more than I expected. Got a great rate on the truck, too. 2.95% 3 years ago.

It’s good for people who don’t like to haggle

You’re gonna pay more but some people prefer that for a better experience.

I’m in sales and love messing with the car guys so I won’t settle for anything less than a great deal. Every time I’ve compared a Comp of what I’ve bought to Car Max it’s always a few thousand more. But again, some will do that to be in and out quick and just pay the flat price.

Huge ripoff both selling and buying cars. Anyone who sells are a car to CarMax is an idiot.

the only problem is, when you have trouble with your vehicle after the sale, don't expect them to answer the phone with a helpful response. and.......you will have problems with a vehicle after the sale. trust me. it happens to anyone who purchases a new or used vehicle.

I went there three years ago to get an estimate on my old Accord. I let them know ahead of time that it had a bad transmission mount.

The idiot appraiser shifted it into reverse and felt a jolt, and claimed the transmission was failing. They appraised it at $700.

Ended up selling it for $3000 to a buyer off Craigslist

I've bought three cars from Carmax. The most positive thing was already mentioned. They have about every make and model on their lot. Usually have several of the popular makes/models to choose from. It's nice to have that in one place.

The actual purchasing of the vehicles is easy but time consuming. I think it took 4+ hours or so. Guess it's that way about anywhere though.

Their system works. The sell a ton of cars.

Wife purchased her last car from them. They had what we wanted, for a price that was not out of market. Communication during and after the sale was terrible, but no different than any other dealer. I agree that many of their cars are overpriced, and they purchase for auction price. They make a killing off of you, if you are in a bad place and need to dump a car. Extended warranties are sold through their own shop. Not the best experience, but we did just have $1700 of repairs done under warranty, in the first year.
