You don’t simply watch a single vehicle for 2 months.
You yourself said you waited or a specific vehicle you couldn't find anywhere else.

I compared prices between Carmax, local used car dealerships, Craigslist...pretty much every source possible.
But without negotiating on the other ones, how do you know what you would have actually paid?

By doing your homework you know how much others have been paying and what a dealership is willing to negotiate.

I meant a specific make and model and price range. I’m sorry you misunderstood.

The last vehicle I bought was four years ago from Carmax and it was the best buying experience I've ever had. The vehicle has given me zero problems thus far.
Next time I need a vehicle, I'm going back to Carmax no doubt.

85% of this thread has been backtalk of CarMax vs other dealers and what is a better deal on your time vs money.
Both ideas are a little incorrect.
The only great deal is to do your detailed research and to buy from a private party seller. You can save thousands off the very best deal you could ever find from an expensive dealership.
CarMax has the luxury of having high inventory for immediate purchase. Most people buy cars on impulse so it works.
Newsflash: If you are able to successfully haggle a dealer down to a price that “no one else can get” then one of two things just happened to you:
1. You bought a make/model/color/option that no one else wants and it will not be easy to sell.
2. The salesman convinced you that you got a good deal when you did not.

The idiot appraiser shifted it into reverse and felt a jolt, and claimed the transmission was failing. They appraised it at $700.
Ended up selling it for $3000 to a buyer off Craigslist
So you sold your car with a bad transmission to some poor person who only has $3000 to spend on a car.

Carmax is for lazy or scared to negotiate people that aren't concerned with getting the best price. Not sure what else to tell you.
Whenever I priced a car at Carmax I was interested in, they were always priced pretty much smack dab in the middle of KBB pricing.

Sold a car I didnt want to them for 11.5k cash. Three other dealers i tried offered a max of 8,500.
bluebook was 12.5k on it. to me it was worth "losing" 1k on the vehicle and avoiding Craigslist crazies.

Huge ripoff both selling and buying cars. Anyone who sells are a car to CarMax is an idiot.
