There’s a smart way to buy from Carmax and a dumb way to buy from Carmax. If you just walk in the door on a whim you will probably overpay a good bit. They have a great app that lists all the cars at all Carmax stores. If you save the cars you like and monitor it for a month or 2 you can find just the car you want and not overpay.
They also have a high standard for what they put on their lot and IMO that’s the real reason for the higher prices - you know you will get a quality car. Also, anything you find wrong with a car they will fix for free within 30 days of purchase. And you can return a car within 7 days for a full refund.
The negatives- they kept trying to push their extended warranty on me. I told the salesman no a couple of times and then had to tell his boss no a couple times. Their financing is high. I saved about 10% on the APR by going through my bank.
My advice
1. Find the car you want on their app
2. Over the phone, get financing through Carmax approved for that car and they will email you the offer sheet
3. Before you even step foot in the Carmax, go to your bank or another bank with that offer sheet and get a much better financing offer through them.
When you walk into the Carmax with outside financing ready to go, it makes for an easy experience. I am extremely happy with my vehicle.

You have a guy in this thread saying a car he bought from them needed $1700 in repairs less than a year after purchase.

A lot can happen in a year.

Well that’s life when buying a used car.

Also matter what type of car.

But you said you're paying more the high quality. Which is it?

Both. Cars break. It’s a fact of life.

Cool, then I'll pay less by avoiding Carmax.

Will probably get a shittier car too.

Oh no, other places have better cars and deals.
Just usually what results from someone thinking they are smarter than the salesman and lowballing for the lowest price. Seems your style.

Cool, then make sure a mechanic gives it a thorough examination, because it’s more likely to have hidden issues. Or you can go Carmax, be patient, wait for the right deal, and buy a high quality car for the same price or slightly more.

Being an informed buyer means I'll get a worse car?

I wonder how Carmax was able to get the exclusive rights to all the high quality used vehicles. Heck of a business model.

An informed buyer would know that the lowest prices doesn't mean anything.
Unless you want to change your context now.

I've never claimed price is the only consideration. So no, I don't want to change anything.

When so many are willing to go to Carmax and pay a little more so they won't have to haggle, it doesn't reflect badly on the buyer or even the vehicle. It reflects badly on the way used cars (and new cars) are currently sold.

So you agree you get what you pay for.
Why say you will save money going somewhere else then?

You think simply paying less makes you an informed buyer I’ve got a car I’ll sell to you for $400. It’s in great condition. Looks brand new

No. I agree that Carmaxc is fine if you are lazy or don'tr feel like negotiating. You can get an equal car for less money elsewhere.

Because you can. This isn't that hard.
