I keep hearing about how life costs too much these days. Yet, the average consumer is paying for all these services they could do themselves. Doordash, car wash subscriptions, lawn service etc... I never see neighbors' teens even cutting their yards or washing their own cars. No wonder everyone feels broke.
It's 41 miles to the grocery store. Whole foods will deliver for 10 bucks.
It costs me 6.3 gallons of gas to make the same trip.
Certainly more than $10

I was paying $60 a month for unlimited washes for two cars. Recently cancelled and bought a foam cannon to use with my pressure washer. Game changer for washing at home and really satisfying

Most car washes use pH neutral shampoo. The damage is done by giant rubber slaps hitting your car repeatedly. It would be dumb to use acidic soap especially in the equipment they run. Most cars on the road don't have any extra protective coating outside of whatever they bought with the car or with any wash and wax they might have used in the past.
Hand washing is the safest and most effective way to remove dirt/debris but I would say a car wash membership has financial benefits for some. Anyone who drives into dusty/dirt road areas regularly, through plants, and uses their vehicle for any type of equipment/personnel transport would rather spend the $20/mo on a membership to save time.

Most detail pressure washers are high GPM/low PSI for optimal foam. Mrs. BTB's cousin started a mobile detail business and got the Active 2.0 electric pressure washer, the machine kicks arse. You won't get paint chips with a pressure washer unless you have well over 3000 PSI with a 0 degree tip against the surface of the paint. Rental car agencies use similar equipment to expedite the cleaning process.

I go to a hand wash place and pay around $55 once a month, but I have a nicer car and those automated things are shite.
I got a guy that comes to my work twice a month... inside and outside, plus a complete hand wax and interior detail twice a year for $100 a month. Not bad, to me, anyways. Plus, whatever he uses on the leather is the best smelling stuff I've ever smelled, as far as car smells go. Something made by P&S. I think all his stuff is P&S.

Always hand-wash my cars, less scratches that way.

A hose and bucket does the job for less

Black vehicles get ruined in car washes. You do know they may "clean" those brushes like once a year, right?

Especially since I need the underbody wash more than anything because of the salted roads.
Since when do automated car washes wash the undercarriage? That’s pretty awesome if true.
Ok I checked on tGoogle and they claim it’s an add-on package for most places. Great for post-snow or post-beach. Salt is a car killer.

Car wash places have lost their minds
yet every one I pass is packed
There are at least 5 being built within 10 miles of my house as we speak. They are going up everywhere. Not all of them are going to make it. Why can't people just wash their car in the driveway???
I can't take my truck to any of them because there is always something in the bed and the attendant always insists that the bed be spotless. I don't even try anymore. I spend about an hour a month washing both our vehicles in the driveway. I suspect it costs me about $1.50 in water and dawn....and gives me an excuse to smoke another cigar....

Your problem ain't car wash prices its a matter of latitude. You live too damn far from the equator. -20 and salted roads is a leading indicator that you have ventured too far from the equator....
