I was recently in the market for new or gently used Mazda CX-5 for one of my daughters. Would have preferred new for the warranty and b/c used prices are through the roof. Daughter needed it ASAP for travel so I couldn’t wait. No new inventory at any dealership in Louisiana. So I called the biggest dealership in Houston- They told me they are only selling (putting on waiting lists) to people that live in the greater Houston metro area. Would not even put me on a list since we are in Louisiana. Bought an overpriced 2020 in Baton Rouge. Still sick about overpaying for it.

I pretty much embarrassed Ascension Honda. They have a Chevy Cruze, asking $11k.
I wasn’t too big on it but I decided to look at it.
I open the door and get a contact high from the severe weed smell. I open the hood and find oil in the engine coolant. The block was cracked.
I offered him $50 for it.
He was embarrassed, and I jokingly say, “y’all got screwed over on someone’s trade-in.”

You sound cheap for someone who supposedly makes all this jack with your side hustle. I also don’t understand going cheap on a car for a 16 year old. The safety features alone on newer vehicles is more than worth the cost for a new driver. I would drive an old beater before I let my kids do so.

I’m not cheap, it’s just I’m not stupid. I’m not paying $3000+++ over the value of a car.
I drive an old beater (2005 Dodge Ram). I’ve had it for 16 years, and probably spent a total of $1500 in repairs on it (not including oil changes, etc).
$12-$15k isn’t going “cheap” on a car if the price is right. Here in BR, $12-$15k will get you junk, that’s why I’m going to Bama tomorrow.

As far as safety, that’s why I nearly pulled the trigger on the Subaru, safest car around.

Careful you don’t end up up having to pay sales tax in two states

Yes, and the car we are getting in Bham has better mileage, better carfax info (no wrecks), and would be at least $3000 more here, if not more.
biggest thing between the two is probably where they sourced the car (trade or auction) and days in inventory. Traded cars are normally lower than auction cars bc you can control the cost to book values. Also, stay away from KBB - mean nothing to dealers. Banks use NADA and Blackbook for values so prices are set by these.

I came so close to paying MSRP plus $4000 “market adjustment” for a new car the other day. I came to my senses in time. Going to try and hold out until they get enough microchips or whatever’s holding up the supply.

Is it a guy with a wet construction paper ankle selling a red Charger?

I found a great car in Birmingham for $3000 less than the exact same car here.

You absolutely can't compare 2 cars like even if they're sitting next to each other. One might have been bought at an auction in excellent condition where the dealer had to pay through the nose and the other may have been traded in with a few issues in not-so-great shape. That dealer could be listing it low to move it quicker and still making his typical markup percentage.

Since there isn't much inventory or negotiating room these days, try carvana. Far more selection and better pricing than in S.E.La at the moment. Cheaper than Carmax as well.

I’m from houston and was in the market for a new Tahoe last year. Every dealer was asking for MSRP plus a $10k markup. Outrageous. I ended up buying a new 2022 Tahoe from Navarre in Lake Charles for MSRP. It depends on a lot of luck.

Baton Rouge is full of pirates, thieves, scalawags, carpetbaggers, and common crooks. Trying to sell a turd saying it is a bar of Gold.

Yes we do. Customers shop their trades online and to other dealers. If you aren’t competitive with the trade, you risk the customer going to another dealership. Not everyone can pull the trade out and still buy the car. Most need to do it all in one transaction or they just can’t pull it off.

I recently got a better deal at CarMax than I could find at any stealership. I did, however, have to pay $299 in shipping to get it from Springfield Ill to TN but the price was 2-3k less than any other I found.

I have a 16 yo boy and we are looking for a car for him.

We would like a 4runner 2012-2014 with around 100k miles or less.

Anyone seen one?
