Car not worth fixing. Now what?

The mechanic called last night to tell me that my daughters car needs a new engine.
The price of the engine is really more tha the car is worth.
We bought it for her to go to college and work, not knowing that these cars have catastrophic engine failure due to timing chain problems.
Now what do I do with the car?
Part it out?

Is the answer to this question really that difficult?

Part the saturn or sell it to LKQ.
Use the money and buy her something better.
Lot of decent used cars for under 4k if you know how to hunt.

really depends on what type of car it is. Most of the time scrapping it will be your best option or donating it and getting the tax write off.

Salvage yard will probably give you $200 for the car...

Most places will do a push, pull, or tow deal for $1000 towards a new car

donate it for tax write off or scrap it for a few $ and let it go

If you give me your busget for a different car, I can list all reliable cars under that price point.

A 14 year old Saturn isn't worth fixing. Time for a new beater for the daughter

2001 Saturn
The scrapyard will give me $115/ton but I have to have the gas tank cut out before it gets there and take the wheels off before I leave.

Where are you located? I'd take it off your hands for a few hundred. I could use a daily driver, and I already have a ls1 to swap in it

donate it, get tax break
Posted on 7/10/15 at 12:10 pm to NatalbanyTigerFan
Sell it to Napoleon

There's a scrap yard in Houma that takes them with the wheels and tank.

My first car was a Saturn, and it too was a piece of crap. Figure out the next car you want to get her and see what they will offer on a trade in. Then go from there. FWIW, my second car was a Nissan Altima - actually quite affordable for a 20 something. I still miss that car. It treated me well.
