What does your husband think the problem is?

GPT: A sudden failure while driving could point to various issues, including the alternator or battery. Jump-starting is a good initial step. If the car starts, it might be the battery, but if it dies again soon, the alternator could be the culprit. A parts store diagnostic can help pinpoint the problem.
That's a crap answer from GPT.
As (only) a few others have said, it could be just about anything. Sure, it *could* be the alternator or battery, but it also could be a dozen other things. Way too much focus on the alternator/battery.
OK, we now have more info from OP, started when jumped, then died when disconnected. So *probably* the alternator, but it could be the battery (even if new), or the connections to the battery. I've seen a case where someone thought it was their battery or alternator because they couldn't get it to turn over sometimes, so they bought one of those charger/jumper things with internal batteries. It always started when they used the jumper device.
When I looked, I saw that one of the battery clamps was cracked - so all the battery jumper thing was doing was acting as a clamp to make a better connection to the battery. When I replaced the battery clamp, the problem was gone.
And I purposely didn't mention that this was my daughter, and that she's not a minor, 'cause you ain't gettin' pics anyhow, so don't ask.

Had this happen to me years ago Ford Expedition. Random shutdowns every so often while driving. Mechanics wanted to change computer (pcm or whatever) for $1200. Deep dive into google searching and found someone else had same problem and it was a coil. Ordered 8 new coils and replaced. Never had problem again. But mine would start up again after shutdown. Not sure if same as your problem.

Check the muffler bearings

y daughter's car died last night while she was driving it on a highway. Does this indicate the alternator, battery, or both have issues? Going to go this morning and try to jump it off to hopefully limp to an auto parts place so they can check it out with their little diagnostic tool.

Yeah, maybe so, but my days of working on vehicles is over. My time off is worth more than the money. It is her car, she is an adult, and will pay for it.
Take the damn alternator off, and take it to O’Reily’s. They’ll test it and give you a new one if it’s bad. It’ll take you an hour tops, and that’s if you don’t know what the frick you’re doing.

I had a relatively brand new Buick that died while driving. turns out it was a faulty wiring harness that connected the gear shift lever to the ignition switch on the steering col

That's a lot more work than jump starting it and holding the brakes on so the lights draw power and turning on the headlights. If it dies its the alternator.

I think a car would still run without a battery.
Had a battery cable pop off once and I arrived fine, but it wouldn’t start when I tried to get back.

It's a 2012 Nissan Murano and I'm sure it takes longer than one hour to get the alternator off of it. I've been working on vehicles since I was a teen/young adult, so I know a little bit but I'm not a professional mechanic. When I got my new truck in 2020 I told the wife I was done working on vehicles. Just not wasting my free time to do that anymore.

Ask her if she put the Christmas gas in it.

Until it doesn’t anymore. My daughter was driving her car home from a road trip this summer and it stopped on her as she was exiting the interstate. Couldn’t get it to do anything. 8 hours away so I couldn’t just go see what was going on. Sounded like maybe an alternator. Fortunately a couple of mechanically inclined guys stopped to help her (and the friends she was with). When they looked under the hood it turned out to be nothing more than a battery cable had worked itself loose. They tightened it up and it started right up and that was all that was wrong.

How old is she? A lot of these new generation kids don't know things like the need to put more gasoline to make the engine run.

Dead battery, bad alternator, or bad starter? Pick your posion. The dead battery will be the cheapest to fix.
My starter went out. Cost me $ 1200 (new) for the dealer to replace the thing.
Welcome to Joe Biden's hyperinflated world.

My 1989 Silverado used to kill on I10. It would just completely shut down and I’d have to coast to a stop. It was an electrical issue that we never could solve. Would change a fuse and it’d work again for a while, then kill again. Had to get rid of it.

This happened to me recently and it was the fuel pump.

Your battery is used to start the car. If the car is running and died it is usually not the battery as the battery does not keep the car running. Alternator, running out of gas, or a fuel injector issue would be more likely culprits. When you try and jump the car back on if the AC coming out does not get cold then likely alternator, as it is needed to run AC compressor.
That is not true anymore. It has not been true for years. Modern cars (the last 20-25 years) use battery voltage to run the computer systems. If battery voltages drops too far below 12 volts the car will shut down.
