My daughter's car died last night while she was driving it on a highway. Does this indicate the alternator, battery, or both have issues? Going to go this morning and try to jump it off to hopefully limp to an auto parts place so they can check it out with their little diagnostic tool.

Was she stopped and then it died or did it die while she was moving?

Had a GMC Yukon that died twice while driving it. Once crossing a four-lane intersection and barely getting across without being hit. The next doing 80mph to Dallas on I-20. Both times cranked back up. It was some type of modular something another.

GPT: A sudden failure while driving could point to various issues, including the alternator or battery. Jump-starting is a good initial step. If the car starts, it might be the battery, but if it dies again soon, the alternator could be the culprit. A parts store diagnostic can help pinpoint the problem.

We need far more info to speculate on the cause.

Why do you need to jump it off….is the battery dead?

Make sure the battery terminals aren't filled with corrosion to the point where it would affect power delivery

If everything started going dim before it died, definitely the alternator

Your battery is used to start the car. If the car is running and died it is usually not the battery as the battery does not keep the car running. Alternator, running out of gas, or a fuel injector issue would be more likely culprits. When you try and jump the car back on if the AC coming out does not get cold then likely alternator, as it is needed to run AC compressor.

My last car did the same on me while going on the ramp on the Mississippi River bridge. It happened twice during the summer and I had to put it in park and start it up again and it worked both times.

Define "died". Does the starter turn normally? Does it not turn at all or sound sluggish? Do the lights dim far more than normal when trying to start it? It could be the battery, the alternator or both. Check the date on the battery, if it's older than 3 years, prepare to get a new one (but let a garage/mechanic test it and the alternator first, just to be sure).

If the starter sounds normal, is there gas in it? If so, it could be any number of things from bad gas to the timing belt.

Did it overheat? Was there steam coming from under the hood?

"Died" is far too generic.
