I have only bought two new cars my whole driving life. Just bought a Telluride, 2020, with all the bells and whistles. It’s not Toyota or Honda, but it’s extremely nice. It’s MSRP was 49000, has 87000 miles and paid 22000 for it, traded in the 16 Camry we bought 18 fot 15000, got 13000 trade. My wife doesn’t drive much.

CRV AC Compressor
Here's an AC compressor for a 2011 CRV - It's $132. There's going to be a decent amount of labor for sure. I was out the door last year for $1,100 with a fairly comprehensive AC repair.
Not bad as compared to buying a new vehicle.

I drive a 20 year old diesel truck. Granted the air/heat work just fine, and it's reliable, but you are not alone.
To replace my truck in kind, I'm looking at $80-90k. That's asinine, particularly with the current economic worries. I'll wait until dealers feel economic pain before even considering an upgrade. I'll happily sit on my cash and pursue better investments in the interim.

You don’t have to buy new. You can buy used. Prices are still high but it’s easier to swallow.

You will be waiting forever. Vehicles will never get cheaper in any negligible way.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've read today.

If he would take his hooptie to an independent mechanic he could easily get his junk fixed for less than a couple payments on something new.
"My AC quit working! I need to buy something new! No, I'll deal with swamp arse because new rigs are too expensive."

You can still get a nice car for not much more than $30k. I realize that isn't pocket change, but as
I bought a 5-year-old full size truck 3 years ago with every option except seat massagers and a moonroof. I paid 18ish out the door. It had 100,000 miles on it, alternately the guy who works across the hall from me bought a new Platinum F-250. Ask me which one has been in the shop more frequently.
Other than random little things on mine that I just wanted to change, nothing has failed. He's about to get his second transmission. I've put 80,000 miles, he's put less than 50.

Smart move. Drive it until the wheels fall off
Just about every relative, including my dad, drove beaters that they'd pick up for $100-$200 and when they finally broke down, they'd go get another one. Now keep in mind this was back in the late 50's up to about the early 70's.
They even had a name for them back then and called them "Fishing Cars".
I don't remember any of those cars having a working A/C other than rolling down the windows while cruising down the road. The ones that had radio only had AM on the dial.
I only had one uncle, my godfather, who would buy a new car and I can remember his blue 66 Chevy Impala. It was like riding in style compared to the beaters almost all my other relatives had.
Hell, my dad owned a string of Studebakers until he died in 61 and he worked on them so much he nicknamed them "Steadybreakers".
The price of new vehicles today scare the hell out of me. Damn near every one of them cost as much, if not more than I've paid for any of the 3 houses I've bought over the years.

They were a good lot for sure. Hard working men with strong family values and all were willing to help out our family after my dad died leaving my mother with 3 kids, me age 8, one sister 6 and the other 4 at the time.
They are all gone now but not forgotten.

What are you looking at ?
Rebates & discounts on new full size trucks are back to pre-pandemic savings on full size. The mid size, they don’t seem to be as aggressively priced, IMO.
The bad news is they ain’t getting much cheaper. The good news is, they have working AC!

I own a crappy 2011 CRV - 260k miles on it, no ac/heat, no working audio (but I own nothing on it)
I get not buying a new vehicle at these prices (I drive a 2018 Silverado and refuse to buy a new one right now). But why not go find a decent used car for $5-$10k if you truly make $230k a year as a family? I bought my daughter a decent used car for cash last August for her first car. No way I’m a grown man pulling in over $200k as a household and driving a beater with no AC/heat.

Why haven’t you gotten the radio and AC fixed?

AC gave out near the end of summer last year. At this point I can't bring myself to fix the AC because the cost of fixing the AC is about as much as I'd get for selling it
But you’re not planning to sell it. So why are you worried about spending a little bit on it? With your income the repair she be inconsequential. Hell, you should probably have way more than enough saved up to where you wouldn’t really notice it.
