Captains Should Try to Get Out in Front of The City on Parade Restrictions

ETA Updated thread title
Obviously the city WILL do something and if left on their own I’m sure the public will hate it. Some great ideas in this thread to mitigate people being stupid but not ruin parade experience
1. Update ordinances to allow more pull units
2. Netting on tandems to prevent cross through
3. Walkers around floats to mitigate idiots doing idiot things or kids doing kid things
Original discussion on the ordinance that limits floats.
If so then I assume tandem floats are the way to get around that? I totally agree that it appears these fatalities were totally the result of careless people but it does seem pretty clear that if each float had its own tractor pulling it then it would be much easier to prevent such a thing.

Search is your friend.
Discussed at length last night.

Who cares is that obviously adults are extremely careless but just seems like common sense says having a tractor driving each float would be much easier to maneuver if needed and a lot less pinch points.
If this was just the city and crews exploiting a loophole then the ordinance really should be updated.

You are really really dumb.

Dumb to change the rule to allow more tractors to pull the same amount of floats that would be much easier to maneuver if need be.
Yeah I dumb. The parade experience would not change at all.

Yeah, the driver of the float will really be able to maneuver that thing in the 1-2 second interval from when drunk parade goer runs up to the float and falls on his face under the wheels

Dude if you don’t think it’s easier to avoid people pulling 1 then 2 or 3 then I don’t know what o tell you. Having more tractors doesn’t affect the experience at all. Also having walkers like to bands do to keep people back would help tremendously as well.
These seem like easy fixes to help with safety since you obviously can’t stop people from being idiots. The Captains of the major parades really should come together with some fixes before the city jumps to some bad fix like fencing in the whole route.

Walking escorts for each float would be the best option imo. Or some type of metal curb feeler type devices to deter people from getting close enough to get hurt. But in the end the average person is pretty dumb and you mix in alcohol.

This is one of the most level headed suggestions I’ve seen here.

Lessening numbers of floats or tandems, or mandating one tractor-one pull won't cure stupid. Period
Obviously. But having one tractor pull a float with walkers to serve as “security” will make it easier to avoid the idiots. Look the city is going to rush to judgement on this so unless you’re ready for them to change the experience exponentially then you need to get out in front of it.
Change ordinance to allow more floats but also require walkers to protect. These seem like easy fixes that would definitely help as opposed to the city doing something like barricade the whole route.
You CANT FIX STUPID but you can at least mitigate it with some easy fixes.

People cycle in and out pre/post bands. Already a ton and they still go right up to floats.
In part because the unique and coveted throws largely need to be handed instead of thrown.
As for ease of pulling- doesn’t seem difficulty is that much of a factor. If we can eliminate people getting in that blind spot it’s the obvious and easiest fix. Just wall if off with some mesh netting.
I wouldn’t mind floats having walkers with them either, to help keep an eye out.

It is clear krewes go with tandems to allow more riders. The city obviously had no problem with this bc they allowed it. My point is that TWO fatalities happened. Were they caused by people being silly? Probably but you CANT fix that.
My point in all of this is that the Captains need to propose a fix before the city decides to do it for obvious reasons.

Except for all the floats designed specifically to be in tandem

If Spanish Town didn’t have walkers, all the drunk bitches near me yesterday would have been mowed down

Or simply mandate chains or ropes be placed between tandem floats to prohibit people getting in between the floats and getting run over.

I went to Iris yesterday and every single tandem could’ve been a single. Tandems used to only be in the 3 Super Krewes and they were just a few now they are in every parade and seem to be common place.
My point is there are some easy fixes. You want a tandem then have the netting and several walkers. You can’t leave this up to the city bc they will take the easiest most conservative fix which would be barricades which in the long would cause even more problems.
