One of the few bank branches that I actually go into, since I work downtown. Never a line, even though only 3 of about 15 teller windows are typically open. Nice tellers too.

I've noticed that from an angle you can see two indentations in the marble in front of each teller window, where thousands of customers' feet have shuffled up and stood over the years. I'll have to snap a few pics before it closes for good.

My grandmother took me to see the vault, probably early 70s. Then we had lunch at the downtown Pancho's. Good times.

The problem is these old buildings are functionally obsolete, as beautiful as they are. The Whitney has been sitting empty for years; some buyers have tried to come on board but there are so many logistical challenges.

The striking ornate lobbies give way to the uppers floors with low ceilings, narrow hallways, antiquated bathrooms, small rooms and small windows. None of which is desirable to modern commercial tenants. Hotels and condos are really the only things you can use them for, and the conversions are expensive and time consuming even with tax credits.

The American Bank Building is now Section 8 which is a damn shame. You walk by and there are some shabby looking people sitting out front.

The First NBC building was originally built as the new home of the Canal Bank, which was finished right before the Great Depression and the bank failed soon after the building was opened. There was a lot of history with the Canal Bank. From the origination of the word "Dixie" up through the 1927 flood and the stories in Rising Tide.

200 Carondelet does not participate in Section 8. You're just talking out your arse on the Internet. The people you see hanging around outside are your standard NOLA denizens with nowhere better to be.

"Formerly the site of the American Bank building erected c. 1920, this building has since been renovated to become nearly 200 apartments. The company handling the rentals, Florida-based Reliance Housing, is a non-profit group focused on providing affordable housing across the country."

It's "affordable housing" even if it's not technically Section 8. You are trying to make a distinction without a meaningful difference.

Hancock Whitney was just behind them in 1899 and is still downtown. At least they're a local bank with local interest.

They still have 7 years to the lease the space.

They may not be using it, but they are still paying for it for the next 7 years unless someone buys the lease.

Also, the Discover deal is a stock merger deal. Shareholders of Discover and Capital One will become Shareholders of a new company Discover One, Capital Discover, or my favorite Crapital One.

Yep. They closed several around Shreveport a few years ago, including the main branch downtown that was in an old Hibernia location.

I worked for hibernia then cap 1. I remember them chartering a helicopter to get the important people who stayed behind with the servers during Katrina. They picked them up off the roof of that building.

I hope they keep the festive colors going on the cupola. They guided me home many a night along bourbon.

Never got why they left their grand old flagship bank building for the bland sterile whitewashed lobby of One Shell Square.

If you can come up with an excuse, try to visit the vault downstairs or by elevator. You can only begin to imagine the secrets that were stored in that vault. And the very simple elegance of the room where you could go through your boxes.

Long gone due to Hurricane Katrina. The big door is still there but it is basically nonfunctional. That room where you went through the boxes was an absolute dump.

Mother and I got appropriately dressed and ventured downtown to attend to some personal banking matters with the Hibernians...

Actually, no time for a TulaneLSU post, but I did snap some pics of the Capital One (formerly Hibernia) lobby today, as I had to transact with a teller. She noted that they'll be open until April.

I'm old enough to remember when the Information desk was staffed.

Note the feet indentations in the marble in front of each teller window, mentioned earlier (last pic).
