The last of the grand, historic bank branches in downtown New Orleans will close later this month, when Capital One Bank shutters its location on the ground floor of the former Hibernia Bank building at the corner of Carondelet and Gravier streets, a beloved structure on the local skyline known for its iconic cupola.

The branch closure marks the end of an era for New Orleans’ Central Business District that, in many ways, is already long passed. Hibernia Bank, which was the largest bank in the state in the 1990s, was purchased by Capital One in 2005. Its one-time rivals, First Commerce Corp. and Whitney, also changed hands.

As for the beautiful old bank buildings that were the hub of a bustling CBD, FNBC's was sold in the early 2000s and is now a condominium complex. Whitney's was sold in 2019; its fate remains unclear.

Guess the Federal Reserve Bank turning the New Orleans branch into a Museum of Trade, Finance, and the Fed was a foreshadowing of New Orleans' loss as a banking hub.

Hibernia was the first bank that Capital One bought. Moving from a credit card company into banking. It's a beautiful lobby.

The top floor of that building is a private condo owned by the son of the developer of much of the Warehouse District. I know his sister. Have seen pics and it's a pretty amazing residence.

I gave him some uplifting news though as we still have the Federal Reserve Board's Museum touting our once Financial Hub status.

If you can come up with an excuse, try to visit the vault downstairs or by elevator. You can only begin to imagine the secrets that were stored in that vault. And the very simple elegance of the room where you could go through your boxes.

Why not?

And why do 90% of your post reference me?

Do I really take up that much free space in your little head?

New.Orleans has no one to blame but itself for its decline.

It was a major city with a great future in the 1950s/Early 60s. Corruption, graft and incompetence sealed its fate and lead to the exodus to Houston and Atlanta.

Exactly, both my kids have 360 accounts and it’s very convenient

All my other accounts are local and regional which are even more convenient

That is a beautiful space. I wonder if a restaurant would work there.

Did you ever eat at the Downtown Broker in Denver? The Broker restaurants were scattered around the city in very different venues.
The Downtown was in the basement of what had been a bank and it had the most magnificent silver and gray marble anywhere.
Google search will lead to a bunch of photos with links too long to copy.
