I recently heard on the JRE podcast about some tribes in New Guinea (I think) that still to this day have ritualized cannibalism. The warriors eat their dead enemies as an ultimate sign of disrespect. But also, the families of the dead eat their dead relatives (but only certain parts) as a way to honor them and its very respectful when the family does it. It was all very strange and I'm sure I'm getting some of the details wrong but that was the gist of it.
