Yes
But religion is a huge motivator and that can be good/bad. It can preserve and encourage morality or it can be the opposition to it.
Societies that root their morality on vague notions of social justice and political correctness or "being kind" will struggle to battle movements/cultures/other societies centered on more dynamic or deeply held values. Pie in the sky socialist movements will fall victim to tyrants and authoritarians, secular societies will fall victim to militant Islam, etc.

I agree with the soundbite, though.
The absence of religion in societies where technology, art, culture, government, social movements etc. have been intertwined with religion creates a vacuum.
I think people feel/will feel that void, religious or not. And I think they'll notice when deeply held beliefs that played a role in hundreds of years of human advancement are replaced with platitudes.

Again, it depends on what exactly he meant by it which is why I called it a soundbite. The statement by itself is too open-ended.

I'm an atheist, and I've raised all three of my kids without religion. They do well academically and socially, and haven't displayed any behavior problems.

Many churches don't really teach about hell anymore
Everyone needs something to socialize them into certain behaviors. Religion isn't the only way to do this. Behavior comes down to psychology, not necessarily religion
But whatever works for the individual, I say go for it. I'm spiritual, not religious but to each his own, I say

Yeah, and religion is just philosophy with a spiritual twist
Everyone needs a philosophy (or philosophies over a lifetime) as a roadmap.
