I am fairly smart, never could do that and I suck at chess

Mouth, this is your father. Call your mother immediately. We need to talk.

I needed the step-by-step book.

Had never attempted chess before, but became intrigued after watching Queen's Gambit and was determined to learn the game. Got the basics and then started trying to get the strategy down.

Decided I would just stick with Go Fish.

My kids have me a gocube for Christmas. It’s an app enabled runic cube that teaches you how to solve it. It’s really cool

Yeah, an autistic kid taught me. He was a wizard, could do all sorts of them.

Ultimately you only need to know 8 permeation s.

Nope never got the interest in being able to do that. Everyone has their hobbies so I don’t knock it either.

Haven't tried since the early 80s. Back then, the best that I could do was one side. That's probably about the best that I could do now.

I'm certain you've since proven to them otherwise.

Nope. Even sent off for a book with step-by-step instructions on how to solve it when I was kid (this was pre-computer days) and still couldn't get it. Finally took that fricker apart and put the pieces back together solved.

taking the little cubes off and rearranging,

A grandparent got me one as a kid when they were super popular. I was thankful but was pretty disappointed. Being disappointed gave way to anger real quick when I couldn’t solve the damn thing soooo I resorted to tearing the cubes off and rearranging them.

What blows my mind are the kids that sit at a table with the cube covered. Cube is then uncovered and they get like 15 seconds to review the cube. It's covered again. Cover removed and they are timed on completing it.

They do that shite in like 10 secs

That isn't what blows my mind, its all the algorithms they have memorized to be able to do that. CFOP has some long arse algorithms that they have to remember. There is like 80 to 120 of those damn things you have to be good at to get that good. I can't even remember the 6 easy PLL ones.

I can, but not quickly. I learned the basic method, and can do it that way. I know that you can get faster at it by learning various other techniques and tricks, but once I figured out how to solve it, that was good enough for me.

The documentary on this is actually pretty good.

I know some real math nerds that can solve it by actually knowing how to move individual pieces but I just learned one set of algorithms

I think pretty much everybody just learns the algorithms.

Blindfolded kids can do it in under a minute, keep practicing, you’ll get there.
