Can someone explain #1? I got the other two no problem.

If a bat and a ball cost $1.10, and the bat is $1.00 more than the ball, then $1.10-$1.00=$.10.

Where do you get $.05?

1) Got after thinking about for 30 seconds. If asked to answer on the spot would have gone .10 no doubt.

2) Got easily

3) Over-analyzed and could not come up with right answer.

1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

T = 1.10
B = 1.00

T - B = Ba

1.10 - 1.00 = Ba

.10 = Ba

2. If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

5 / 5 / 5 broken down = 1 mach / 1min = 1 widget

x = 100 widge what is t?

1/1 = 100 / t ---> t = 100

3. In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

Well the patches grow by a factor of 2 , the expression is 2^n-1, where n is the number of days. If it covers the whole lake @ day 48, we need to figure out the day it covers half of the lake.

2^47 = 1.407e^14 / 2 = .703e^14 (rounding)

2^46 = .703e^14 , therefore on day 46+1 (47) half of the lake will be covered.

$1.00 - $.10 = $.90

$1.05 - $.05 = $1.00

B = Bat?

Ba = Ball

I figured that would be obvious.

Edit: I didn't downvote you

edit#2: I frigged up the second question.

The ratio is 1 to 1, it takes 1 minute for 100 machines to make 100 widgets.

Reading the article before the questions kind of gives away the way to answer the questions.

Y'all are dumb

If it's gonna take 48 days for the lilies to take up the whole lake after they double in number then that means that the lake is already half full today
