9x9 multiplication table should be memorized by 3rd grade, not something you should ever forget either. After that you should have learned the tricks like for multiplying a double digit number by 11 (you add the two numbers and put it the middle and add 1 to the first number if they add up to over 10 e.g. 11x43=473, 11x77=847). I've played steel tip darts for years and mental math is something that I've never gotten rusty on. So many people I play against can't keep score without their cell phone handy...

By the time you graduate high school you should be pretty solid at basic math up to tensies at least.

I don't know WTF they're teaching kids these days, but 1 through 12 multiplication tables were hammered into me by rote memory. 45 or 50 years later, I still know my multiplication tables.
Some friends of mine have a son in 4th Grade. He was learning his multiplication tables in the Fall. I aggravated the shite out of that poor child. He's smart, but not particularly interested in REALLY memorizing his tables. He can work out most in his head, but it takes him a couple of seconds. For some reason he was having trouble with 6x8 and 8x6. So every time I saw him I'd ask, "Hey, _____, what's 6x8? What's 8x6?" It got to the point that he'd yell, "48!" as soon as he saw me. So I started asking any problem that 48 was the answer to. 4x12, 3x16, 2x24, 96÷2, 144÷3, 192÷4, etc. Eventually he knew the answer to whatever I asked was going to be 48, but his preferred response was, "I DON'T NEED TO KNOW THAT!"
He learning his state capitals now and I know those too. I almost feel sorry for the poor kid, but I'm having a good time and I'm convinced he secretly enjoys it. Kind of.

Kid could say, "I'm going to do my 3's today." He then stood in front of the class and recited 1 x 3 = 3, etc through 12 x 3 = 36.
If he got them all right, a star went in the 3 column by that kid's name. Miss one, and sit your arse down in shame.
The next day, if the kid was bold, he might take a shot at his 9s or other big number.
Every moron in our class full of country bumpkins eventually managed to fill out the chart.
I will admit that 11 x 12 still makes me think about it.

When I was learning Multiplication in school, they made us take a sheet of paper and line off 12 columns and write the 1-12 tables daily. Then in order to pass we had a timed test given by the Principle of the school. It was crazy
