I once had a bail bondsman come to me in jail without me calling anyone.

I sat in there for about 2 days and then he showed up and they pulled me out the pod to talk him.

He straight up tolld Me that he scans booking records and he if he sees a middle aged white person for a non-violent offense, he comes to see them.

I gave him my user name and password to my checking account and used to verify that I had $1000 in my checking account and then he bonded me out a few hours later. He drove me straight to his office to sign the paperwork and then brought me to my car.

100% true story. St James parish about 20 years ago.

Since when are jails in the bond business?

You are conflating bail with the bail bond industry. The government is 100% in the setting, collection, and administration of bail. This was going on long before the bail bond industry existed. It is in the financial and logistical interest of the jail to get you out of holding as quickly as possible. This is why tha majority of jails take credit cards to cover bail.

And if you used a credit card, couldn't you just cancel the charge upon release?

You could attempt to and if your CC company complied, then the same thing happens that happens when a bondsman revokes your bond. You get a bench warrant and you likely get charges stack in the case of disputing the CC payment.

That would suck if they allowed you to use a card, jail tries to run your card but it needs you to approve the charge......on your cell phone, yet you don't have your cell phone b/c you're in jail

The "one phone call" if a TV fiction. Most jails will have relatively easy access to phones in holding and you can make multiple calls until you are the guy that has made calls all day and is close to time to dress out and move you out of holding. Again, it is in the jail's and jailors' interest to get you out of there. If you have cash or card in your personal effects that you were brought in with* that allows you to post bond they will normally get your wallet and take you to the admin point that accepts bail payment. If there is an issue with the card that requires you to call they will likely use their phone and dial the number on the card for you. If you can get it worked out fine if not back to the holding cells you go.

* there is a possibility cash or maybe even cards would have been taken as evidence, if this occured you clearly can't use it for bail
