Can someone explain why police officer uniforms are always a dark color?

On my way home today, I came upon a pretty bad wreck about 1 p.m. and observed a police officer directing traffic. The first thing I noticed was his entire uniform was black, his bullet proof vest and belt holding all his other equipment was black, along with his black cap.
The officer was doing a great job, but it was 97 degrees (based on my temperature reading in my vehicle) and humidity was so thick, it felt like someone threw a couple of heavy blankets on you when you walked outside. According to the local weather reports, the heat index around that time was 104!
I did observe another officer relieve him and he went and sat in his vehicle, but I have no clue how long he had been out there. Common sense would say that wearing a dark uniform, with 30 lbs extra gear in the extreme summer heat, has to be a safety issue.
Does anyone know the reasoning for the dark uniforms because I think it's a nationwide thing?

Appears more "tactical" would be my guess.
Also, a dark color is more easily concealed, easier to clean, and implies force, power and authority.

If their uniforms are all white, a shite stain will show up easier and they will have to do laundry more frequently.

Yes, Mr Google can....
many police uniforms incorporate darker colors, like black and dark blue, as darker colors 'are easier to clean, help [to] hide stains, and help [to] conceal officers in tactical situations'
Does your Google friend not work?

Are you dumb? It's a dirty job and they deal with a lot of gross shite. Stains aren't as obvious.

A light uniform would look like crap before long.
Just from all the washes and sweating in them, they would look like shite in about 2 months especially in the summer

According to Supertroopers this is incorrect.

A year or so ago our PD Chief switched the uniforms from white to dark colors. This, with an emphasis on sweat stains, was the reason he gave me.

They aren’t all black however. Varies by agency.

You don't want a bright color in a situation when a perp wants to shoot at you, it's that simple. I always had a problem with the gold badge we wore over our left chest, it shows up like a shoot me sign. Luckily, I made it out w/out being shot. That's why range masters wear red, it's easy to see and hopefully they avoid being victims of a terrible officer on the range.

Yes, I'm well aware of how to use Google, but not everything you read is correct. Apparently, you do believe everything on the internet is factual based on your smart arse comment.
I also asked the question because I enjoy reading what other people have to say, and quite often, I gain a better understanding of the situation because some individuals have first hand knowledge about what is being discussed.
It's called having an intelligent conversation, but you wouldn't know anything about that.

1. Traditional uniform
2. Dark colors cover up dirt, scratches, etc easier.
3. Sometimes cheaper
