Mine just liked to have fun. We did soccer, football, and baseball at the local rec. He liked them all, but could give two shits about practicing on his own.The rec district barely has enough kids to make up one baseball team since everyone is doing travel balll, it's sad.
He started golf lessons with First Tee last year and really enjoys it. He actually wants to go to the driving range on his own time and hit balls. So we'll stick with that. He also does a handful of outdoor camps every year (sailing, canoing, sleep-away camp for a week). And he's also a gamer kid and takes piano. So he won't be scouted to play professional ball, but he'll be well-rounded and hopefully develop some skills that will help him throughout life.
thats awesome...baseball wasnt his thing...thats fine. even if there were enough to make multiple teams...the comment about your kid not practicing on his own...means he wasnt all about it.
if he likes camping and golfing that is awesome, things he can do his whole life.
some kids love baseball or volleyball or soccer or whatever and want to play at a higher level and play more games....and that is cool too.

Which begs the question of why get away from rec leagues?
You control what team you are on.
You control who is coaching your kid.
The coaches you want your kid to play for can control the roster they want the kids to play with.
The coach usually has a vision of their team that they offer the parents of how much they want to play, not want to play, where they will try to play, and how important winning and/or development is to them. That way, choosing a team that fits your kid best can be made.
Your kid develops better friendships with teammates playing with kids over longer periods of time than a roster that changes over every 4 months.

Travel ball is one big "mind trick" to make "money"
"Omg, Braxton is playing 2 hrs away in a big tournament"
"We in hotels for this tourney"
"Jay Johnson will be there watching the games"
"Maybe he'll get recruited"
"We going to the Dallas World Series"
"We playing at big league dreams, omg scouts everywhere for little Johnny"
Meanwhile, Dude from USSSA, 2D, OTC ETC in the back counting money....
Every kid should go back to playing rec leagues. It used to be competitive. You practice, playing games in a 6 week season, have a home life on weekends, enjoy your summer off being outdoors bike riding, swimming, fishing, hunting etc and save a shite ton of money in the process. Thousands upon thousands of dollars wasted. But hey, people do what they want to and thats cool too. Travel ball is almost year round. They don't care about Jaxson's arm, just the entry fee, the gate and concessions. How many times have you heard so and so's arm is shot?

Rec ball is pretty much dead just about everywhere.
This is a pretty general statement and I imagine it has something to do with being in a town with a small population.
There were so many 9, 10 , 11 and 12 year old boys signed up for Rec here they had to create a waiting list and get more coaches. They have 16 kid pitch teams in the 9 and 10 age group. A dozen more in the 11 and 12 year old division. All made up of 12 to 13 players. The Rays, Tigers, Giants and EBC all have competitive teams here. I think it's good for the parents to have a choice.

Funny how travel ball dominates OT conversations.
My kids play because they enjoy it and like hanging out with teammates.
I don’t particularly love being at the park every weekend, but if that’s what they want to do, I’ll sacrifice my time.
A lot of parents simply won’t carve out the time for their kids and they feel bad about it, so they shite on travel ball. Others have kids that didn’t start young, so they have less than zero chance of making any team. They also shite on travel ball.
Everyone that shits on it falls into one of these 2 categories.

This is in over simplistic, meathead view of it.
Actually, it's a great way for kids to play sports, parents to hang out and when kids are playing baseball, they are outside exercising and not up to no good.
It's not all for scholarships or college ball or whatever the haters think.
My kids played and we all enjoyed it. Great memories. Great friends that we still hang out with to this day.
But, it's easy to hate on things, so go with the tired ol' Braxton BS.

matter how many sports he plays your kid isn’t going to be Tyrann Mathieu…that is simply genetics. Playing one sport at an early age helps normal kids excel and gain tons of confidence. My son played one sport until Jr High and he ended up getting 9 varsity letters, one in the sport he played. Quit that one after his freshman year to do other stuff. So play a bunch of sports poorly while young, or get some fight in you early playing very good competition then let that carry you. Just an opinion though, works different for every parent.
So you had your kid only play one sport up to middle school and he ended up quitting it after freshman year but it was worth it because he got a letter?
Great argument you’re making for yourself dude…

How often does “every weekend” actually play out in a calendar year?

This is true. Which begs the question of why get away from rec leagues? What is wrong with the concept of practicing a couple times a week and playing one or maybe two games on a Saturday for 3-4 months a year? Why did it turn into some year around expensive time suck?
huh
you just described travel ball except its 3-4 games on a weekend
rec ball is 1-2 practices a week for 3-4 weeks and then 10-12 games and then all stars. thats if none get cancelled.
90% of teams dont play year around, god damn not that hard to understand....dunno why yall keep repeating it
as far as OWEO...dumbass...8-10 tournaments is every other weekend from last weekend in feb through mid june. How the frick is that too much? how dumb are you?
as far as cost depends...for most in south la the cost is going to be 1500-2500 plus uniforms. that pays for tournament fees, umpire fees, pays the coach, field/cage rentals etc
just to clear this up...90% of travel teams will do something like this
fall-
oct-dec...1-2 practices a week and 2 tournaments
spring-
practice starts towards end of Jan or early feb 2-3 times per week. 1 tournament end of feb, 2 in march, 2 in april, 3 in may, 2 in june

yea in places like Lafayette rec ball still thrives. In smaller towns its still big until they get to kid pitch and then they play mostly just travel until junior high then they play school or school and travel

It’s where parents travel to other cities to take their kids to play sports, normally staying in places like La Quinta upon arriving in said cities. Parents get beer and hang out outside by the pool while the kids run up and down the halls and stairways. Parents complain about playing time and talk shite about the people’s kids who aren’t by the pool. Parents spend all day at the hot arse fields for a morning and afternoon game and devise a plan for drinks later, creating clicks of hierarchy. The team decides to go to a throwed rolls place but the few parents who didn’t like the pace of play go on their own. They meet back up by the pool with beer again and don’t say anything about what was said at dinner. Kids do the same…two more games on Sunday and the drive home…so wind is out of the sails for drinking until 1 am like it was on Friday night…

thats awesome and no for the most part all of rec is dead in Louisiana, even the bigger leagues. the kids that are in it...suck...same with most of texas and most of the south.
sometimes the really good travel kids will come back and try to go to LLWS at 12, thats it

Problem with rec ball in smaller towns is that once the games start there is no time or place for practice so the amount of reps the kids actually get is few
With travel you can find time and places to get practice in during the week then play on weekends

but since you are so sure...what teams in Farragut? i wanna check if you are lying or not. tell us this team that travels all over the country
It’s easy to travel all over the country in Tennessee… just go 2 hours in any direction and you’ll hit 10-15 different states
South LA is a little different

pretty much but there are other categories
1) they cant afford it so they bitch
2) their kid isnt good or didnt get picked so they get mad...like the dad earlier pissed because a team had tryouts for 3 spots.
3) they just want it to be like they remember it. The nostalgia over rules common sense

he ended up quitting it after freshman year
They won state, he was the best kid on the team by far. The coach was pissed because he was missing practice and games due to another sport. The other sport’s main competition season is during school soccer playoffs and he was winning those national competitions. He quit to continue on in that sport.
