Well they typically get paid both. Total compensation would have been a better term

What’s the best background for medical sales besides being a doctor? Biology, engineering, etc?

Honestly anyone with a strong science background that is highly intelligent, can quickly grasp complicated processes and most importantly has a high degree of ethics and drive. The drive is the one thing I can’t teach. You either have it or you don’t. I will figure it out in the interview process and if I get a sniff that you would ignore a phone call I pass. I find prior combat arms officers or Collegiate athletes have these attributes....maybe because I was both I have a bias.

No not really, but we starting to incorporate more AI into what we do

Ironically there will be a sales rep telling you why his AI is better than the next guys Ai.

Most people don’t know what they don’t know. 90% of decision makers don’t have time to read the ins and outs of your specialty. A good rep in my Industry saves customers money by picking up on things they do wrong with their equipment

Margins have definitely gone down with the internet but that hasn’t stop clients from making jackass decisions

I’ve been in medical sales for 23 years in many different types. When people ask how do I get in to your field, I tell them, like most jobs you have to pay your dues. Some in our field make a lot because most people wouldn’t do what we do. If we lose an account we don’t get paid. There is no shutting it down at 5:00 or on weekends. We get calls and emails 24/7, Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, etc. When I started, I covered 4 states all by car and a different hotel every night. I had a guy in operations tell me, all our customers could just place their orders on-line. I told him how do you think they got there. They wouldn’t know who we are without the sales rep. I’ve managed and worked with a lot of good and bad sales reps. I guarantee the crummy ones aren’t making much money . And I always like when people say cap their commission. Last I checked for every dollar I make for the company I get I get a much smaller share then the company.

At least spell properly when you’re bragging on how much you made at the saw mill.

Ideal compensation to me would be mostly salary with a capped commission. That still incentivizes growth for the salesman, but I'm not paying a guy to go take the same orders over and over again.

You obviously have zero experience in capital sales.

Sales is a tough way to make a living. I'll bet that the best salesmen feel like they are always on the clock.

Why are you assuming they always sell to consumers? Most are B2B. My buddy works at Arthrex and he’s in every surgery instructing the Dr. on the implants and the tools required to use them.
