There needs to be a stigma w/ receiving public assistance. It's a safety net, not a lifestyle.

People whip out La Purchase cards like it's not a big deal. Make them stand in line for essentials.

Under the current laws, sure.

But in my perfect world, they are a temporary thing meant to help people get back on their feet. That would be cruel to give them a stigma, for instance, if a small town had a major plant shut down and a bunch of folks couldn't find work.

Why is being a moderate such a prideful thing? Most “moderates” I know are too uninformed to have an opinion

I don't know if it is still like this but used to be there were multiple accounts accessed on a single card. Some people had food stamp accounts and some had accounts that allowed anything to be purchased. Some of the reasons why people had these full access accounts were people that had foster children.

Ok, that's great.

I promise Laquisha and Destiny using stamps at the local corner store to buy twinkies for their brood of bastards then spending cash on booze and cigs aren't foster parents.

(in this situation, Destiny is a white stripper)

I didn't say I was a moderate in this thread. I'm not sure why you're saying this. Nor did I say I was prideful in anything.

Numerous non-profits would be there to assist. I believe people have hearts to assist people in need.

But look at how long people are on "food stamps." It's ridiculous.

Aren't there more white people in total on food stamps? (obviously we have larger population overall though)

It’s taxpayer money, it is his business. We pay for unhealthy food on the front end and surging Medicaid costs on the back end.

Yes. There are.

Not sure why some people in this thread are trying to turn it into a racial issue.

It just seems so logical, considering our national debt and obesity epidemic, that we would limit the options to fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, milk, water, meat, eggs, diapers, formula, etc.

It would be a pain in the arse oversight wise and the lobbying would be hard to get on the list of acceptable items.

It's not just stores that benefit from the current system. It's the food manufactures, which also employ people. It helps keep demand up for the corn to make the corn syrup, the shrimp people make a living fishing for, ect. Like a mini farm subsidy that also helps keep people fed.

It's not like I have a problem with incentives for fresh fruits and veggies, or even pre-cooked healthy meals but there's a reason SNAP is funded in the farm bill.

Because the dirty little secret is that it's not only a subsidy to the poor, more importantly it's a subsidy to the corporations that own the markets supplying the food.

I'm sorry if I just don't feel bad for corn syrup producers losing out on some money from making poor people unhealthy and running up medical costs for everyone. I think it would be a net positive for this country.

Shrimp would be allowed. As would actual corn.

This is what I'm gathering. And that is fricked up.

Subsidy farmers that make good stuff, like eggs, milk, rice, grains, fruit, vegetables, etc.

I guess, I really don't know. Maybe say no non-essentials at all. Club soda and diet soda are clearly not essentials.

is milk?

Exactly. I think the issue is that once you get down to it, there’s no definition of where the line is drawn. And new products come out every day.

Plus many of these people are part of a cycle where cooking was never taught and they don’t even have the materials TO cook. It’s a really tough call to make.

Don't think you should be. Just need to remember ADM is a big company with a big lobby. I'm answering why, not if there's a better way.
