At a convenience store I frequent, they sell pizza. If you use EBT, you pay for the pizza raw in advance, then they cook it for you “for free”

That's how it works for most of the seafood and boiled crawfish

I think the issue is that once you get down to it, there’s no definition of where the line is drawn.

The clusterfrick of corruption that would go on to get things on and off the list would be something else. Much less the difficulty of enforcement.

It's done with a little card right, so every computer system at every store in the country would need to be set up to not let certain items be paid for and not just the current narrow range of booze and smokes. Then you need people to do audits to ensure compliance. The extra regulation wouldn't be free and make a lot of stores pretty pissy.

Its not just that. Its the strain on medical costs and infrastructure due to fat and unhealthy poor people. And that bill is high.

The thing that gets me more than the EBT issues is the fact we subsidize many of the crops that are ultimately the worst for the countries health. Why do we subsidize corn, sugar crops and wheat instead of better for us fruits and vegetables? There are a lot of poor people whether getting EBT benefits or not that have to eat cheap and the cheapest way to eat is crappy food.

A few months ago I watched a large lady buy about 20 airhead candy bars from the checkout line with her EBT card. That was all she bought, nothing else.

Because the food stamp program is about buying votes, not food.

Is there a lobbying effort behind it from places like WalMart?

I agree that it needs to be bare bones essential groceries, and heavy fines when caught "selling credits" for cash or whatever kind of scams come up. I also feel that a woman has her tubes tied once she has a 2nd child out of wedlock, and on welfare. Some will say thats extreme china commie levels, but if you are on the govt dime (forever not like having a bad year, but have paid into it) then I dont care.

But grocery stores, food mfgs, etc all have their hand in this cookie jar. Would be interesting to know how much rev these companies make off of it all.

Lots of f'd up things our govt lets happen when their hands are in the cookie jar with lobbyists, and seeking votes. Both sides are to blame too.

Have any politicians from either party really pushed this idea before?

Of course not, they don’t want to piss off the “voters”

I agree with the spirit of your post.

However, the government telling someone what they can and can't eat is a little commie, don't you think?

If we put strict dietary requirements on EBT cards and health insurance this country would solve many of its biggest problems in a few short years

They should just give out MRE's instead.

What do you think two MREs per day for a month would cost the taxpayer? Hell, I bet one MRE costs more than whatever the daily food stamp allowance is. How would you distribute them? That'll cost something too, and I suspect it'll be more expensive than loading EBT cards once a month.

Of course they do. That’s probably half their revenue

I believe they should just airdrop a crate of MRE's onto the porch/lawn of each recipients dwelling. Although it may make the skies over NOLA and other cities look like the movie Deep Impact.

Yep. I don't disagree with what people here are saying SHOULD be the case. But anyone who thinks an overhaul of welfare, with tons of new regulations, wouldn't cost $$$ may as well go out and start their own Fyre Festival.

You can't just wish your way into things getting done. What it would take to restrict/enforce so strictly would be costly.

With their OWN money, yes. Not with taxpayer funded money. I've never seen the crab legs and steak meme at the grocery store but I've seen plenty of disgusting baskets full of candy, chips, and soda being paid for by EBT.

I agree that it's infuriating to see a basket loaded with crap - soda, ice cream, king cake, etc. - getting paid for with food stamps. The reality is that it would probably be a gigantic pain in the arse to recode every food item to "healthy" vs "not healthy". The grocery stores don't want to absorb that cost, nor is it in their best interest. We're lucky they're willing to exclude liquor, cigarettes and Powerball tickets.

I would think no one can explain it to you because it is illogical. There is zero reason that it should be allowed as currency for random luxury shite. Soda, pastries, etc are definitely luxury items that should not be allowed to be purchased.

But look at how long people are on "food stamps." It's ridiculous.

What's ridiculous is Amazon paying ZERO taxes on $11,000,000,000 in 2018 profits.

But politicians have succeeded by having us pawns fight over relative pennies, things like who can buy fricking Twinkies and MD with the whopping $300 a month in food stamps they get, while the real theft and abuse occurs by people richer than you or I can ever imagine becoming.
