An iPhone in 2010 brand new was $499. Not that cheaper.

Don't buy factory unlocked if you need HD Voice, Wi-Fi calling or any other similar advanced features to work.

HD Voice used to work on some unlocked phones, but AT&T is getting pretty strict about provisioning non-AT&T branded devices with these features.

If these are things you don't care about, or might be switching carriers soon, then unlocked is an excellent choice.

Don't finance your phone and pay as you go. Search the tech board.

On top of that, the older phones never cost $650+ like the ones today

The first iPhone was $599 ten years ago.

BS. AT&T doesn't allow them even when you do get an AT&T phone. Blackberry made wifi calling available on BBM for the last four years..... but AT&T disabled it.

Factory unlocked means I get updates and get them quick. Carrier updates suck and take forever to get pushed out. Apple has their own deal on updates but everyone else is at the mercy of the carrier and yes, even Samsung is at AT&T's mercy.

If you've paid it off in full, it's yours. If you pay like 50% of it, you can trade for a new one.

I'm looking at something like this too. If buying the phone up front and the payment plan come out to the same total amount then why not finance?

Where do you do this? I don't need the latest and greatest when it comes to phones. I have a iphone 5se and it's doing weird shite now so I need to upgrade. I'll be fine with the Iphone 6. WHere can I find the best prices? I'm with Cricket now and they'll sell me one for $300.

They made the plans cheaper which basically just shifted the costs from data to device. Our bill stayed about the same but you are financing the phone (interest free). I just buy ours outright instead and mine is unlocked and not tied to any one carrier.

I like how people act like AT&T or any carrier dictates the prices of these Apple/Samsung/LG products. On top of that, the older phones never cost $650+ like the ones today do, do you know how much money cell companies would be losing if they did it the old way still? Be upset with Apple, Samsung, and so on

Moto Razr used to cost $600

Oh and the one catch of the next plan is your $600 phone is locked to that carrier, until you pay it in full, and get them to unlock it. I suggest buying the phone outright unlocked. If it's a good phone you can sell it at any time and but whatever else is new. Go look at iPhone prices on eBay. Things depreciate like a Jeep Wrangler

Or just check out budget smartphones. They're getting better and better these days for your average consumers.

example:
Moto G5

I had a first gen Moto G and it was awesome. iPhone is not 3x the phone but it is 3x the price.

I came back to iPhone but tried out a few cheaper phones and completey agree they are becoming awesome values.

Because when you finance your phone you also over pay for service.
