They are still alive and in relatively good health. I guess I should clarify. They will leave me and my 2 siblings with a lot. I am thankful for that. That’s why I’m not blindly going with the boomer hate. They worked their asses off. They were also able to save at a MUCH better clip than me. They were more frugal than me, and I can be pretty damn cheap. They also jumped into a great housing market, and benefitted from the other things mentioned in here.

Yes, looking at it that way, I will probably be able to leave my daughter a nice sum, and hopefully able to provide her with great memories. My parents accumulated from scratch. I have the same career, and will only match their wealth with what they leave me.

What’s your hourly rate on this?

Roughly 30/hr. I call as many games as I can. It typically will not interfere with my day job. It’s a gig that works, and I can schedule it.

I seriously doubt you speak this way, to "deliver your message", to people standing in front of you, i.e., face to face.

Sure, sure

So it goes without saying, if someone spoke to your wife in this manner, to deliver their message, you would have no issue. Cause after all, they could be aged, experienced, and smart like you are. Their position would, doubtless, be correct, like yours undoubtedly is.

Who’s wife am I berating?

But yeah, I’ve had some harsh teachers. That doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are talking about and I can’t learn from them.

At my most influential point, I had the welfare of around 400 men and women directly depending on me to do my job and I tried to know all of them by name with their personal phone numbers on my phone and mine in theirs. 24/7 access. If you count the Board, it approached maybe 900. I did it well. Those numbers don’t account for spouses and their children.

Yes I do talk to people this way. I tell the truth because that’s how you help people. Not BSing them. I am direct. I know this but I’m not gonna lie to you. Don’t like it? That’s a you problem.

Oh and people want to talk about how empathetic they are? I developed a grinding teeth habit and stayed up many a sleepless nights concerned for their welfare and thinking how I could do my job more effectively.

Ground my teeth so hard that I had 5 crowns done because of it. Oh and migraines.

So why didn't Reagan and the Bush's fix it? After Carter there were 3 consecutive terms to do something.

WTF? I feel like you are living in another reality. The 12 years of Reagan and Bush launched an incredible expansion of wealth in America. https://www.weforum.org/stories/2019/04/50-years-of-us-wages-in-one-chart/

This link is for non-supervisory wages. As you can see they are doing fine relative to the 1970s and 1980s. What has gone up is their expectations for their standard of living.

I’ll play along. They were less materialistic than I am. But the VCR they bought cost an arm and a leg, and a DVD player and streaming doesn’t cost shite these days. In that regard, I suppose it evens out.

I drive a 14 year old truck with 175K on it. The engine doesn’t sound great these days, and that’s the ONLY reason I figure I’ll be in the market soon. I have a dated home, and do my best to get some wiring, painting, patchwork, etc done as needed. I coupon a lot these days. I’m old school…and I document and budget for every dollar I spend, even if it’s something for a buck.

In a nutshell, them not buying the newest TVs and electronics probably evens out, as the cost for that stuff is so damn cheap now.

No no no. Don’t play along. You’re still fighting it.

Joe,
No one here is saying “don’t work hard,” “don’t save,” or “don’t better yourself.”

What people are pointing out is that, on average, it’s objectively tougher now for younger and blue-collar workers. That’s not feelings, that’s data.

So the real question is: can you acknowledge that the starting point is worse for them than it was for you?

If yes, then “work hard and save” is necessary but not sufficient. We should be asking how to add to that—policies and support that give them a real shot at the kind of security you had, instead of pretending it’s all just about individual grit.

If you genuinely want them to succeed like you did, step one is admitting they’re not playing the same video game on the same difficulty setting.

Try rereading the post you quoted and maybe use your finger this time. Your reading comprehension may increase.

Maybe not though.

I was squeezed for the better part of a decade and random shite in my life after I first graduated. I figured it out painfully by not being an impulsive dumbass. They will either sink or swim. No different than anything else or any other generation.
