I recently got in a heated argument with a friend of mine about this. He's in his late 40's and has been prescribed 90 30mg instant release (supposed to take 3 per day 1 at a time) Adderall for close to 10 years now. Problem is he's grown a tolerance to it I guess. He quite often takes 2 at a time for his first dose of the morning and then ends up taking 1 at a time 2 or 3 more times that day. He's averaging 4 or 5 a day which is causing him to run out a week to week and a half early each month. During that time he's irritable, extremely dragging arse, just very unpleasant to be around. That's what sparked the argument. He's very defensive about the pills and it's to the point that I just stay away from him for the last week. I told him he's pretty much fricked if he doesn't get control of this situation but he's convinced himself is ok because it's legally prescribed to him. God forbid I tell him anybody can get a RX for it these days. The dude's become a pussy. He can't cope with anything until he pops an Adderall. A bird could shite on his truck and he'd need to pop an Adderall to clean it off.

I know his case isn't rare, especially with the instant release. Is there any regaining control at this point? Have you known anyone to go back to taking it as prescribed once they start abusing it or is his only option at this point getting off of it or talking to his Dr about an alternative? I've never tried one but I've tried coke back in college and if it's anything like that then I can see why it's easy to abuse it. We've been friends for around 25 years now and shite has changed him drastically.

Is he crushing & snorting them?

I hear that’s much more effective.

Of course it can, but as with any other drug, it comes down to the person. He has to realize it's a problem before he'll decide to stop the use

That’s insane that he’s even prescribed that much for one day. Most people I know are prescribed ONE 30 mg a day. Honestly man he is straight up addicted to what I call legal meth. He’s really going to have to take a look in the mirror and realize the shite is not good to be taking that much a day especially over a long period of time. I would just have a man to man with him and maybe provide some info regarding long term abuse and the detriment of consuming that much. After that it’s pretty much in his hands to make a change.

Fired someone recently that was pretty heavy on them. When she was on, very productive and great asset. When she wasn’t, it was a nightmare to be around leading to termination.

Instead of taking more, maybe when he feels like its not working, go a day or two without it then take it. That's a better way to manage it and he can get it filled each month and build up a supply with the ones for the days he doesn't take them.

People will look back on adderall like we look back on the Nazis with pervitin. It's just legal prescribed meth.

This is a big issue. Adderall helps some people be more productive, more social, etc. That's what makes it hard for so many to quit.

I really don't think so. I think it's only due to taking 2 at a time instead of 1. His coping skills were far greater before he got the script. Like I said, it's like he can't do anything without popping an be Adderall these days. He's a really good guy, which is why I'm friends with him and actually give a shite about him, but that damn script seem to have taken control of him.

Stories like this make me so sad. My cousin is the same way. He has very severe adhd and fibromyalgia. When he doesn’t have his medicine he gets cold sweats, nausea, can barely get out of bed really. He has to go to like 6 doctors just to get enough medicine to get by

I was prescribed Adderall for 8 years. Got off it 5 years ago. Best decision ever. That stuff is trash.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to talk your friend out of taking it. You’re a great friend for wanting to help him though.

Time to change it up. I've read about your "cousin" countless times.
