As a fratnerity pledge & then just a good friend at LSU I would get whatever free cigs & dip I could. We had to keep a pack of cigs on us as pledges. Then it just sort of became a habit/might as well snag them kind of thing. Why not? Didn't cost nothin'.

The AGR guys were also really cool in class about giving out cans of dip as they were all "brand ambassadors" or whatever. Just had to get them the empty cans to turn back in.

My youth soccer team got free coolers and duffel bags from one of the parents who must have been a Philip Morris employee.

The bags and coolers were all red with the Marlboro logo displayed very prominently.

I’m sure some of the parents on opposing teams gave us some odd looks since we were 9 or 10 years old.

Some of y’all never been a broke 18 yr old at the big buck expo and visited the Skoal both to get your free can of bandits then headed to the others to stock up on other items and it shows.

Back in the days every tobacco company was trying to beat out the competition and would give out free products at all kinds of events.

Anybody remember Marlboro miles? Brand loyalty was a big thing to them.

They turned around and sold that info to insurance companies who then jacked up your rates b/c you and everyone else always lies about being a smoker.

The only reason I ever started smoking was because of this - I think that’s the point.

Luckily the habit didn’t leave college with me.
