Why shouldn't that cost, the cost of the employee surviving to work another day, be borne by the employer?

Because the work they do is not worth that much if the government didn’t arbitrarily set it as such.

This what I’m interested in seeing. The technology is already there to significantly reduce headcount. Fast food restaurants have mostly avoided it due to expense, bad PR, etc.

But now there is no reason not to.

Again, this is completely arbitrary and subjective.

You think it's different today?

Not sure. I, nor 99% of adults dont or havent worked min waged jobs in decades.
quote:

Age: Minimum wage workers tend to be young. Although workers under age 25 represent nearly one-fifth of hourly paid workers, they make up 44 percent of those paid the federal minimum wage or less. Among employed teenagers (ages 16 to 19) paid by the hour, 4 percent earned the minimum wage or less, compared with 1 percent of workers age 25 and older.
Gender: Among workers paid hourly rates in 2021, about 2 percent of women and 1 percent of men had wages at or below the prevailing federal minimum.

These are jobs for kids and ex cons.

I get it, and I welcome it. As long as the welfare system is restructured to promote self-improvement rather than work against it as it mostly does presently.

This is part of that fantasy world you live that was mentioned earlier.

Any time.

Just to reiterate: if you are passing on a new or increased expense 1:1 in your prices, then you are leaving money on the table at one or the other (or both) price levels.

What do you all think will happen with California? Will it end up like Greece?

Ten years from now could we seeing a $30 minimum wage and a $50 meal from BK?

Wtf are you talking about? How in the world is it the responsibility of a restaurant owner to make sure his employees "survive"?
Having living employees would seem to be a pretty critical requirement in the survival of the business.

Yeah you pay attention: your employees need to eat and I don't think taxpayers should be subsidizing that.

You mind elaborating? Let’s keep it simple. I own a mom and pop burger joint (hypothetical).

Franchise owners are not McDonald's corporate, you absolute idiot.

You are correct.

quote:

McDonald's follows a heavily franchised business model and has substantially decreased its owned and operated restaurants over the years. Indeed, in 2023 McDonald's had 2,142 owned restaurants, vs. 2,106 restaurants in 2022 vs. 2,736 in 2021 and 2,677 in 2020.

quote:

In the US, out of the 13,438 McDonald's restaurants, 95% of the restaurants are franchised. In 2021, McDonald's generated total revenue of $23.22 billion, of which approximately $8.71 billion was generated from the restaurants located in the US.

quote:

There are more than 40,275 McDonald's restaurants at different locations in the world. Most McDonald's restaurants are located in the United States, with over 14,000 locations. Other countries with a large number of McDonald's restaurants include Japan, China, Germany, and France.

Then, again, that job (or business, or industry) probably should not exist in the market. If the only reason a job is performed is because the cost of the employee's existence is subsidized by some welfare program, and if the product cannot be priced such that the market can support the employee's continued existence, then the product should fail. This seems pretty plain and simple to me.

I won't get into arguing any exact cost of living shite, it's obviously extremely variable and, yes, a bit arbitrary. But generally speaking if low paying positions are only filled in a local market because those peoples' income is supplemented in other ways, then it's probably not a "living wage". I'm fine with states/counties/cities setting their own levels.
