A floor similar to $5 wage prevents a lot of bad abuse of power from happening in places where there aren't a lot of jobs to go around or education to help improve the workforce.

But the point is, you have to start somewhere. I started working when I was 16 for $5.15 an hour (and small amounts of tips). I now make far more than that 10 years later, but that was the minimum at the time. Minumum wage jobs exist for a reason. It takes a low amount of skill and is meant to be a starting point in gaining employment experience. I think it needs to be there. It doesn't need to be $15 an hour, but it should exists to keep people from being taken advantage of by greedy owners. Almost nothing in this country exists in a truly free market so I don't see why wages should either.

Companies that are paying workers low wages are often doing it out of necessity.
or because they can

They can't afford to pay someone $50,000 a year. I don't think they would start doing it just because the state raised the minimum wage.
you do agree companies will try to maintain the same profit margin right? To do that they will raise prices and people making 50k will need to make more to get the same bang for their buck. It might take some time for the correction but eventually the min wage will be worth the same as it used to be

What's behind door no.2? Another problem that shouldn't exist Johnny!!!!

What does that tell you about the value employers place on your education and experience in a related field? It tells me they view you as worth about twice the current minimum wage. You made decisions that resulted in your current circumstances. Were you uninformed when you made all of those decisions, or did you give higher priorities to factors other than compensation?
Calm down, it was just an example. I actually make much more than what that job offered. And in a completely unrealted field. I'm only saying it's not always as easy as "move if you want more."

I agree with this, and then the guy who is making $16 is going to be pissed he isn't getting the massive raise the guy who is now making $15 just received. When his value was once double minimum wage, it is now only 6.7% higher. How is that person going to react? I highly doubt it's by working harder. THIS is the problem that can't be solved.
Also, the subsequent rise in cost of goods will make the $16 not worth as much.
This is an all-around disaster for California and is so poorly thought out its hard to fathom.
I think in 10 years it will serve as a model for what not to do in this country, so it may serve the conservative good in the long run.

Good news, really. People will realize how much small things such as fast food will end up costing.
It'll either lose people jobs (by replacing them with machines), or the price will skyrocket.

Of course that would be the goal. I understand how this has the potential to cause massive inflation. I'm not saying the minimum wage should be $15 an hour. I'm simply saying a minimum wage should exist.

$15 in urban parts of Cali would be like $10 in Louisiana. It's really not that outrageous.
Unless you are a small business owner. It won't affect the rich, and it won't help the poor; but middle class small business owners will really be hit.

I sure hope youre right, because it seems like ignorant liberals are multiplying faster than us. For evidence of that see...

Higher than the national average yes, but it's all relative to cost of living. $15 in urban parts of Cali would be like $10 in Louisiana. It's really not that outrageous.
You do realize that this min wage hike will only make this difference even larger right?

Agree 100%. Like I said, I don't think the people who can afford to pay higher wages to talented people are intentionally keeping some people at very low salaries. Or at the very least, this law doesn't affect those people drastically. It's the people who CANNOT afford to do business at wages higher than they are offering that will be crucified here.

Not if the cost of living in Cali continues rising. Check the COL in San Francisco right now and compare that to New Orleans. Then look at minimum wages in both and tell me which job you'd rather have.

It doesn't need to be $15 an hour
If you give an honest answer as to why $100/hr shouldn't be the minimum, then you've also answered why $15 shouldn't be either.

Do they really not think the whole economy will adjust? They are retards not to see the writing on the wall.

These people aren't stupid by any stretch of the imagination. They know exactly what will happen, they know it will not solve anything. However, it goes garner them more votes when it comes time to run for re-election.
I don't necessarily have a problem with there being a minimum wage for people who are working 40 hours a week, and I have a sneaky feeling the article in the OP is leaving out some very important key elements.

I'd suggest between $8-$9. It's a wage that gives people enough money to eat on while still providing a strong incentive to move up. It also doesn't cripple the person making $13-$18 an hour the same way a $15 minimum wage would.

That's easy. An $8 minimum wage doesn't cripple the small business owner the way a $100 wage would.
