Will businesses with large amounts of minimum wage workers not just move to a neighboring state?
idk how that would work for a company making money in Sacramento for example

It's not just fast food workers that make that kind of money. I get contacted almost weekly by recruiters for jobs that are available. Today's was one that paid $16 an hour. I have Master's Degree with 10+ years in a related field. That's an insanely low wage for my qualifications. I declined to interview.
A friend, who is an interior designer, finds jobs offering $12-$15 an hour for people with degrees and experience.
The cost of living is outrageous out here. The economy is also crappy so employers know they can get top talent for low wages. Great for them now, but those people will leave when a better opportunity arises. And it's not always as simple as just pack up and move to another city, state, etc. Most people can't leave without a job and some people have families and are established out here.
I still don't think the government should be interfering. But don't think it's a bunch of unskilled, uneducated people demanding to be paid more. It goes beyond that.
This is true. It's not like everyone who was making slightly above minimum wage will still be bumped up to slightly above minimum wage. They'll all probably just sit at the bottom of the pay scale together, which I"m sure will create economic problems. That's why I think $15 is too high - it affects all those people who currently sit in the $12-$16 pay range. The federal minimum wage should go up to about $9 though. Every other state can adjust accordingly.

I say raise the min wage everywhere and get rid of about 98 percent of our welfare programs.
I'd be very down with this, maybe not to the degree of 98%.
Eliminate half of welfare and make the remaining half very strict. Then increase federal minimum wage a good bit and still save money when you look at the bottom line.

Minimum wage shouldn't exist at all, but that's another argument all together.
It's probably not too much of a problem in most cities in California, but the rural areas will get hammered. If this happened in Louisiana it cripple most small sub 20 employee businesses.

You either have way too much faith in business owners or don't give a shite about people that have to start out working at the bottom. Either way, you're wrong.

I would think that is exactly what would happen.

If there are any call centers or light mfg businesses that can relocate. They'll be setting up shop in Utah or Arizona very soon.

The federal minimum wage should go frick itself. Every other state can figure it out on their own.
There, I fixed it.

Ok, that's a different argument

How much will a Big Mac cost now?
Probably about the same. They will eliminate the front of house jobs.

That's not how it works, that's not how any of this works
seriously when minimum wage is raised the government will also raise the welfare minimums

Why? If I'm a small business owner paying my emplyee $12.50 an hour and the state mandates I give them a raise to $15, what incentive do i have to bump it up further to say $18 an hour?

Can they just change "minimum wage" employees to like a base salary of $20k?
(20k is essentially about $10/ hour)

yeah, but why is that how it works? We need to change the fricking rules

Look at the bright side, maybe all the minimum wage earners in Louisiana will just move to Cali.
Don't get our hopes up like that.

Yeah but sometimes you have to sacrifice. If it's moving to better the life of your family or you working out of town for a while you have to do it. It's not always easy but if you are motivated you find a way. You don't lean on the government to fix things for you.
