Still active in 1997, but not sure how long after that.
ETA: I guess my memory is failing me, 82nd retired them in 96, they served as opfor into early 2000s.
I swear we still had them at Bragg beyond 97...

That was a Sheridan - it was in 1987.

LAPES
LOW altitude parachute extraction system. Not touch the ground.

I want to say un the early 90's they had a load get caught on the way out and crashed a plane also. I don't recall if I ever saw a "LAPES" in person.
That's what the OP is - a clip of that crash in 1987. That was the last public demonstration of LAPES.

Before watching that video I was going to ask if that's the plane they call the "Angel of Death" then I saw the reference to The Interpreter in the video and confirmed. We can argue politics all day long, but our military has some of the coolest shite for conducting battle.

leave it to the OT to post videos from the 1980's like it is recent news

I’d think it would be OK. It’s basically a touch-and-go….kinda hard, but probably about as violent as a carrier landing (I know Hercs don’t land on carriers but they are designed to land on some rough terrain).
Nope, if that plane hadn't of crashed, it would have probably been a static display somewhere. You can see the empennage flex the fuselage, the outer wings flex. Count on cracked center wing box and significant fuselage damage.
That wasn't a "hard landing."
540 feet per min sink rate is max allowable on an assault landing.
I've flown my share after post hard landing repairs. One plane had flown in 5 years. Always exciting.

Nothing like one coming in under a Morton attack

It’s also been released in 1/35 scale. Already in my stash.

A USAF C-130E crashed during an open house at Fort Bragg on July 1, 1987, during a display of the low level airdrop technique known as LAPES, (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System), in which a parachute is used to pull the cargo out the rear door while the plane makes a touch-and-go. Pilot failed to pull-up after deploying M551 Sheridan tank, hit the tree-line, burned, killing three on board, one soldier on the ground, and injuring two crew.

Do those m10 booker tanks use turbines?

I wonder if that C-130 ever flew again
Only as replacement parts in other C-130's.

This.
I would imagine those pork chop fittings connecting the outer wings also had sigificant cracking, if not just plain being broke dic# afterwards.
RSAF pilots over in Jeddah loved testing the structural limits of their 130’s……….. without intent that is.

It would be more impressive if the tank hit the ground firing
