"American Pie" is about Buddy Holly, et al. "Vincent" is about Vincent Van Gough. Two completely different songs.

Just learned that it was one of Tupac's favorite songs.

quote:

Like Van Gogh's painting, "Vincent" has touched a wide range of creative spirits over the last 50 years — even Tupac Shakur, who once told the Los Angeles Times, "The lyric on that song is so touching. That’s how I want to make my songs feel."

From an interview with Don McLean in The Tennessean, October of 2020
quote:

BH:  I cannot imagine the people that have come to you to say how much that song touched them. I think there’s no better illustration, but it was Tupac’s favorite song. His girlfriend took it into the hospital room as he lay between life and death so if the worst happened, he would be listening to this song. And it’s what Tupac left this world hearing, "Vincent.”

DM: That’s the thing. His mother insisted that (song) be in his documentary. I was so proud because we spend so much time being divided by the politicians. To be in a pandemic when people are really helping each other, to do this thing where you are trying to separate people, I don’t think is right. We are not separated. We are much closer than people realize. To somehow send the message out that it’s 1964 again, is just not true, because I was there.

The Weirdest shite in all that is the guy losing his lucky charm he wouldn’t fly without right before the flight, then he dies in a crash , I can remember if it was the big bopper or Ritchie Valens.

Musicians should seriously consider staying off private planes.

Ah, well, I just was kind of surprised by that. Also read where he was a big fan of 80's British pop. Picturing him listening to that song or some Kate Bush just doesn't fit with "Thug Life".

Van Gogh gave his seat on the plane to Richie Sambora.

I know you say that in jest. It was Waylon Jennings that gave up his seat for the Big Bopper because the Big Bopper wasn’t feeling well.

Buddy Holly found out and came on the bus to give Waylon shite and told Waylon he hopes the bus breaks down. Waylon responded with “I hope your plane crashes.” Those were the last words he said to Buddy Holly.

The songs name is Vincent.

It's crazy that two of the best songs ever written are on that same album.

It was the cobalt pigment he painted with that led to his insanity

Ironically Wilbur Van Gogh was the pilot’s name.

(That’s actually a lie. I just made that up. It was Roger Peterson.)

Yeah but Roger Peterson had a cousin that went to school with Leonard Skinner. And well we know how that turned out for Elvis.

Probably his second most significant single. His career was defined by the supernova that was American Pie.

This song, however, is one of the gems of the folk "singer/songwriter" era.
