I'm in the market for an SUV. Right now I'm leaning towards either a Ford Explorer Sport (2016 or newer) or a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2014 or newer). A Tahoe would be nice, but they're too damn expensive.

Any advice/suggestions?

Grand Cherokee is a good car. The 2017 Acadia also looks very nice.

I'm a 4Runner fan, but it's not for everyone.

Got the 2015 Explorer for the wife last year. She loves it but I don't. I just don't like the way it drives. I wanted a Tahoe but I found hers with 6k miles and it was a good price. In hindsight I should've just gone with the Tahoe or a 4runner

The first question I'd ask is you want an SUV or a minivan shaped like an SUV? The answer changes things considerably.

See if you can get your hands on a Pontiac Aztec. You're welcome

A 4Runner is superior to both of those in every area. But by your initial post it looks like you lean toward domestic cars so I would go with the Ford over a Chrysler product any day of the week.

Wait a while. There will be a surge of car purchases on the gulf coast as people and dealerships replace their totaled/flooded vehicles.

I just got an Edge Sport. I'd recommend the Sport line of Ford SUVs. Very well equipped for reasonable prices. The driving experience with the Ecoboost engines is very enjoyable. Boost is fun

Not in ride quality or available tech. 4Runners are fantastic vehicles though.

ETA: So whoever downvoted, which part are you downvoting? The fact that that 4Runners have harsh rides compared to the competition, or the fact that despite that 4Runners are fantastic vehicles? Because those are both facts.

Actually I love Japanese Cars. My last two cars were a Nissan Titan and an Infiniti Sedan. The only downside I've heard about the 4runner is it drives more like a pickup truck. I drive a lot between Houston and Nola, so highway comfort is important. I don't necessarily need something with ultra off road capability, just something with 4WD/AWD (for hunting trips) with decent space and a nice highway ride.

You're not gonna notice much ride difference on a smooth highway...

I can understand the appeal of the full sized SUVs then.

Is the Mercedes GLE in your price range? It's mid sized and easier to park. If you don't need a third row, it's a good vehicle.

Acura MDX or Lexus RX (if you can put up with the hideous styling) are also both good.

It drives different because its a real SUV, body on frame and has good offroad capability. I dont know why people think it drives like a old pick up truck with a SFA and leaf springs in the back. Its not a plush Cadillac but its perfectly comfortable by any standard.
