LNCHBOX is a proven car guy on this site. You seem like the non-car-enthusiast here. A 4Runner enthusiast/homer/fanboy, certainly, but perhaps not much else.

Rode in a 14 4 runner, 5 hours to orange beach. I could not wait to get out of that bastard. It was like riding in Fred Flintstones car. If you are spending most of your time 4x4 maybe, but for normal driving. frick that!

My mom always had 4 Runners. The suspension on those things were always shitty, especially if you were in the back. The newer models may be better, but the older ones were terrible.

My wife had a '12 Yukon Denali that we were very happy with, but if you aren't going to be towing much, the Acadia might be a better option.

Bought a Ford Explorer Sport last September. 2016 model. The Jeep had a better ride but the Sport with the ECO boost has amazing power.

The gas mileage on the Sport is horrible and the gas tank is not big. (Fills up on the passenger side)

The Red color is awesome BTW

once you get used to that comfort and space it's hard to step down in size though

The Expedition I rented has the Ecoboost. I was really surprised how much power it puts out but it does have a bit of turbo lag.

As for budget, I'm looking to spend between $30-45k

You should be able to get a really nice '14 4WD Overland for about 35k or less

I have a lot of nostalgia for Ford SUVs (Explorers in particular) but after trying the Jeep there was no going back for me.

Do you need to Tow? Do you need 4x4? If so your only real choices in that price range are 4-Runner and Jeep Wrangler 4door. Every other non unibody would be too expensive.

If you don't need towing or 4x4 then just get a crossover.

Paid $42,000 for the Explorer Sport we bought. Didn't have front end cameras or second row seat heating. I would take less options and get the Sport instead of a loaded XLT or limited.

This is one thing Toyota won't be able to remedy unless(until) they do away with the solid rear axle. My Xterra had SRA and leaf springs and riding in the second row was like being in a school bus again.

She drives a GLE63 now. A lot smaller, but she got used to it quick.

I don't disagree, but it's fun as hell to drive in a straight line.

It's what she wanted. It was that or the X6. Between the two, I think she chose correctly.

Good thing you didn't get her the X6. Prolonged exposure to them can lead to blindness.
