do you pay sales taxes twice buying a car out of state? Or do you just register/title it in La. and pay taxes here?

I believe you pay taxes when/where it is registered.

I sell cars to my LA friends all the time.
You pay LA state tax only, and not to the dealer.

Do you have to provide a notarized affidavit that you are not a resident of LA?

You can buy in Texasand pay Louisiana taxes and register at the same time.
Do your homework. Some dealers try to throw in charges that should not apply.
I negotiated a deal for my sister and they tried to add 3% for dealer processing an out of state registration.

Just let the dealer know during the paperwork process and they'll make sure you don't pay TX taxes.

I just bought my truck in tX about a month ago. If I would've financed it they would've included my LA sales tax rate and handling all the registration in LA for me. I paid cash for the truck so I just paid asking price and they FedEx'd me all the paperwork a week or so later that I took to the DMV here and paid my taxes and registered it.

Are yall doing negotiating before going there? What dealerships are yall finding better deals at?

I did all my negotiations on the phone or email...it took a while to find a dealership willing to deal without me being there. I bought my truck at Randall Noe in terrell, tx just outside of Dallas.

I'm not. I just found a car on Autotrader.com that I want. It's in Houston so I'm probably going to go there next Wednesday on my way to Shreveport (as if it's on the way - LOL!).

i've done this many times but be careful if your financing... there are sketchy hombres in those dealerships that sell your ss# to their amigos.
fought identity theft for over a year... texas has many power companies that will charge just on a social for 3 months without payment.

Bought a new truck in Houston. I live in LA. Paid no tax in TX. Got a temporary tag and drove with it for almost a year (Way past exp date). Finally went to a local agency, paid LA tax, and got a LA Lic tag.

I have bought the last dozen vehicles in Texas. Consistently 8-10% cheaper tha LA best price.
Go see Henry Lewis at Lewis Chevrolet in Canton if you want a chevy. He sells more Corvettes than any other Texas dealer. Great guy, great prices and he gives you a tank of gas and a silver dollar on the way out. He also owns that first Monday's flea market.
But I search the Internet and just find what I want and start emailing. Pretty easy and I've bought a couple and never even talked to anyone.

Literally bought a car today in TX (granted I live here), but inquired about the process for LA. I think you just skip the tax and registration fees and take care of it on your own in LA.
I stopped at a few dealerships informed with invoice price, etc. Finally started emailing dealerships when the ones near me never had the lower level model in stock. One gave me 3k off msrp without even talking to me. It was below any invoice I found. Threw in tint (supposedly $495). Plus I had a bunch of color options in the trim level I wanted. I know it wasn't exactly the will cover method where you turn down first offer, but when I asked to look into other ways to sweeten the deal, he basically told me it was what it was. I was comfortable and signed the papers. 2 1/2 hours at the dealership (test drive and all). Soooo easy. Find the big volume guys here (not all dealerships are equal).
