If you dont read the Carfax you kind of deserve it.

When I was shopping for my new car, any dealer that wanted me to pay to see the Carfax was an immediate no.

Not worth it. Nobody on the used marked will buy a salvage titled car.

Disagree here as there is someone always looking for a "deal".

They're repaired pretty poorly for the most part though.

Only draw back is the Salvage title due to minor damage

This is what I don’t understand, if it were only minor damage why was it totaled in the first place?

I’ve always wondered about the cars that someone was murdered in or seized by police for drugs

I’d buy a car someone died in and repair some bulletholes in the upholstery. Or I don’t care if there were bricks of heroin stuffed in the undercarriage.

Seems like these go for steals as well

Every rebuilder says it was "minor damage".

Slight frame damage isn't as repairable as it once was. You can't just cut a piece out and weld a new piece in b/c it seriously affects the overall integrity of the frame. Most frame damage can't really be repaired in the field as shops lack the equipment and expertise to do it back to factory spec. Thus, something that looks "minor" results in a total loss, especially if it's in the cowl or door area.

Really depends on the car. Generally a truck is always worth it.
Ladder frames can be repaired easier than unibody.
Sports cars and collectibles can be worth it too.

Knew a guy who flipped these cars as a living. Life long guy in the car business at multiple levels. He was best friends with the auctioneer and always had inside info on what cars were bunk and which ones were undervalued before even showing up to the auction.

You’d get eaten alive in that situation if you come in green thinking you’ll make a quick buck.

You'd have to make a helluva buy to make it worth it.

Buyers of those cars generally don't want a "story" car.
I think that Jag I had took about a 15% hit for really minor damage and still had a clean title.

Agree with you on trucks, buyers seem more willing to overlook title/carfax issues. A salvage title is still gonna hurt it though.

Because even though the damage my be minor and cosmetic, it's expensive to have a shop fix it correctly.

Maybe I’m just looking at the damage overall (including the repairs) and basing my judgement on that. I can see how on the surface a 1” crack may sound minor, but where it’s located and the amount of work to fix it wouldn’t make it minor damage IMO. Although in this case Chevy wouldn’t/couldn’t provide the replacement part. With that Porsche, it was repaired using all OEM parts per the listing.

And what I meant in my original post was that it may not have needed minor repairs for the alleged “minor damages.”

Meaning the repairs cost an arm and a leg, so how can they get away with calling it minor.

I bought one with a "salvage title" Only after I had the car shipped to me it came without the title. After big hassle they sent me a "for destruction only" title. The was coparts auction. They lied and said I misread but I had several screen shots of the online auction.

A total loss is a total loss.

Can you halfass repair a car and sell it for more than what you have in it? Yes, there's a butt for every seat.

Will it be structurally sound and as good as new? No, of course not.

Now, you can make a great track car out of some of those.
False. I've seen cars totaled because it went half off the road and tore open the transmission case. Cost to repair was too high so they totaled it. Simply put another trans in it and drive away would be easy with zero structural issues.

For the car to total at the cost of a trans replacement, how much could the car have actually been worth before the crash? Not much.

Also, one example doesn’t prove or disprove anything. Just like every car that has been totaled doesn’t have to be structurally compromised.

Cars that aren’t worth much can be totaled bc it has hail damage only.

I'll stand by statement as I was referring to cars that were actually worth more than the cost of a trans.

I see your point, but obviously if it was written off for the cost of a transmission it wasn't worth a helluva lot to start with.
