Just got mine a 2006 Mini Cooper S, manual. Cheap, fun, small so he can't pile too many friends in there. Has like 8 air bags.
I work on my own cars so the maintenance isn't an issue. With RockAuto and ECS Tuning you can get anything to your door in a couple days. Even for a German car.

Got my oldest a 10 year old civic for $6500 a few years back. It served him well through HS and most of college (he bought new vehicle with his $$$)
I'm now back on the market for my youngest. Looking at a Corolla for him.
I absolutely refuse to buy a nice vehicle for my kids. Two reasons.
1. they will likely get in a wreck their first few years of driving.
2. I make them pay their own insurance so they have skin in the game. New car insurance would be too expensive for them
additionally, gotta incentivize them to earn their next vehicle on their own.

I've sold used cars for 6 years.
Don't buy a Hyundai Sonata with 155k miles. I know that probably seems like a great deal compared to an equivalent Accord or Camry, but there's a reason for that.
Those Sonatas don't age well, at all. The difference in interior quality and engineering is apparent past 120k miles. Switchgear, seats and interior trim pieces wear much faster than the Japanese cars. I've also seen lots of little electrical failures as well, things like windows and mirrors just quitting all the way up to the entire gauge cluster. I've also seen fuel pumps fail prematurely, weird transmissions, etc. Now, I realize any of this can happen on any car, but it's a pattern of lackluster everything with older Hyundais. Honestly, a 2011 Chevy Malibu is a better car.
They also had major issues with oil consumption in those 2.4L 4-cyl engines, enough so that there's a huge recall out for them.
Car and Driver article about it
Long story short, I wouldn't even blink at a Camry or an Accord with 155k miles, but you couldn't pay me to buy a Sonata with 155k.
YMMV. Carry on.

quote:Seriously. My first car at 16 was an 89 BMW 325 and I thought that was super old. It was as old as I was and my parents got me plates that said "MY AGE", I was a bit embarrassed by it
95 is pretty old in 2021

Look at used trucks instead. New drivers, especially boys, are safer encased in tanks!
That's what folks in Texas do anyway.

Big thing where I’m at is parents buying their young baws cherried out classic pickups and forerunners of SUVs(Scouts, Jeep’s, Broncos, and such.)

I have two boys of driving age, both wanted and received 20 year old vehicles. 1995 land cruiser and 2001 cherokee, $20k all in for both. After school, if they choose to sell them they should be worth the same or more than I paid for them.

That is why I bought my boy a 93 Bronco, big, heavy, and not too fast and the thing is increasing in value.

Single cab truck. So he and 1-2 other could only ride in it, unless he loads all his friends up in the bed

I'll never understand the car at 16 thing. I would literally buy myself a shite bucket and say they can borrow it before I'd buy them a car.

My grandfather worked on stunt cars along with cars for the movie studios in Hollywood back in the 1970's and early 1980's.
My grandfather fixed cars for Elvis Presley, Lorne Greene, and other famous people on the side as he was extremely good at his craft of working on cars.
He could have let me have any custom vehicle he had at his custom car dealership and shop.
Instead of getting me a rocking vehicle I got a Ford Pinto.
He bought me a 1973 Ford Pinto Station wagon in a dark brown color with the wood paneling and curtains in the back and sides of the back.
It was a very ugly vehicle though it was good on gas during the late 1970's.
Traded it with my cousin for a 1975 Mazda pickup with the Rotary engine.
At the time both vehicles got me from point A to Point B with very little maintenance.

We had a 96 Corolla that my boys drove in high school. It was a beater, but it was dependable. We’ve bought each of them a truck, but not during high school.

Mazda Miata or older rx8. Give him something kind of cool
Miata's are cool and reliable, but it'd have to be an N1 or N2 with high miles, house paint touch ups and no seat covers for 4k.
RX-8 - if you can find one that actually runs it would be an extremely rare event.

Get that fricker a cheap working piece of shite. I started driving in 02 and was gifted a 1988 Buick Century
The equivalent here would be him getting a 2007
Or you receiving a 1976
Just to underscore how much better hobodickcheese’s parents treated him

No way in hell I’d let my 16 year drive a Miata with the size of vehicles on the road these days. Bought mine a 2008 Tundra Crew last year when he got his license. This thing is slow as shite which works out well.
