The quality with a jump from 4K to 8k in price is more than double your money. Spend 6-8k now and sell in 4-6 years for 3-4K.
You could probably get a first generation tundra or sequoia (2WD) private party for 5-8K. Or an old Highlander. Or just buy a carolla, Camry, civic, or Accord in that price range. A Lexus ES from around ‘05 to ‘08 is probably only in the 5-8k range and will last a long time.
You want to be the person buying a 12-14 year old car for 6-8K and selling a 25 year old car for 4K. You don’t want to be the one buying a 25 year old car.

We are looking at a car that costs less than 4 grand if possible
Also I can only imagine the repair bills you’ll have on that thing
Or just do like any honest man does and buy yourself a new car and pass on the old one to the kid

A rusty 25 year old Silveraydo is a typical first vehicle up in these parts.

A Subaru suv from the mid 90s can be had for $4K in the south, anything with 175k miles or less will be fine, they easily go 250k with few issues. They are easy to work on, so he could get some experience doing his own maintenance.

Get that fricker a cheap working piece of shite. I started driving in 02 and was gifted a 1988 Buick Century that my parents bought brand new in 88 then my sister drove until it was my turn, it’s a rite of passage

He is gonna hate a POS vehicle that always has problems
Just spend the extra money and make sure he is good and not always having fix the thing

Congratulations on the shitbox with thousands of dollars in deferred maintenance that is relying on 20+ year old safety equipment for your son.

I’m looking at a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 155,000. They want $5990 but I’ve got them down to $3750
No accidents
Full nav package, heated seats, moonroof, etc.... just gotta hope it’s still there next week when I go check it out mechanically and see if anything is wrong with it. I need a grocery/work getter
