Never used Butcher Box but me and some buddies do SRF a lot. The meat is great but I’m not sure it’s worth the price. For example, a 6.5lb ribeye roll was on sale for $400, regular for $600. We got 6 ribeyes out of the roll. Were they good, absolutely. Were they worth that much? I don’t think so.

It’s really the experience of buying meat that expensive that’s fun and makes you feel like a high roller. I’d like to try Butcher Box though.

Friend,

Neither is as good as a regular butcher or even Sam's. My favorite butcher in the Metro is Dorignac's. As I detailed in TulaneLSU's NOLA Metro cheesesteak poorboy, Snake River Farms is particularly poor quality. Somehow SRF has hoodwinked those who have more money than sense and think expense equals quality.

HEB Bunker Hill blows Dorignac's out of the water.

There are levels to this shite.

You make a good point!! We get used to thinking if a brand advertises on XM or a popular podcast they’re superior in quality to the local guy.

I had Butcher Box for about 6 months but cancelled. I had the beef and pork option plus a package of bacon in every order. Overall, I realized that I could do better by using a local “real” butcher. I could also spend money more efficiently by buying the cuts I really wanted at COSTCO, etc.

Things I liked:
Receiving different cuts of meat I wouldn’t have chosen on my own and also receiving prep ideas.
The quality of the meat was very good.
Customer Service was responsive.
They threw in some reusable shopping bags that are very high quality.

Things I did not like:
They were proud of their algorithm that determined exactly how much dry ice to put in your box so it arrived just as the ice disappeared. The algorithm didn’t account for 100°+ heat in Texas because boxes would arrive with no ice and dethawed products. BB always replaced the items but the follow-up boxes arrived warm in some cases too.

I got a big pork butt at least every other month. That accounted for a significant portion of the shipment’s weight. I don’t think there’s much difference in the quality of one to the next - I always felt cheated when these were included.

The free bacon every month was 9 slices.

The ground beef had a weird consistency and would form small into small balls when I browned it.

If you live in the Baton Rouge metro area Iverstine farms is awesome. All raised on their farm and delivered to your door once a month.

Better off with Snake River as their beef will be grain finished choice/prime beef.

Butcher box is grass fed (likely select/ungraded) with no guarantee that you aren’t getting Brahman/tropical breeds.

Lol. SRF is one of the few wagyu beef suppliers in LA. It is pretty high quality stuff. Not sure about the monthly subscription stuff, but the SRF wagyu at Tramontes is high quality.
