Where the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum is.
Trains ran from there until 1967 which is 2 years before Roger Miller's version of the song, but I'm not sure when Kristofferson actually wrote the song.
He wrote the song while he was a helicopter pilot in Lafayette and was going back and forth between Lafayette and Nashville so there's actually a good chance he was waiting on a train in Baton Rouge at some point.

It's not a train station. Amtrak has a partnership with Greyhound where Greyhound provides service if the train doesn't go through your town, but Greyhound does.
You get on a bus at the bus station and ride to the train station in New Orleans or Lafayette. Amtrak's route between New Orleans and L.A. swings South of the basin and back up to Lafayette, then it more or less parallels I-10 all the way to L.A.
EDIT: HOLY shite. It costs almost $2900 and a total of 4-5 days of travel to go from Lafayette to L.A. and back if you want your own jail cell sized bedroom on the train with a private bath and shower and zero entertainment options other than "shite what you brought". Also, you've got two days in L.A. before the next train heading East leaves, so you've got to spring for that on top of the ticket.
Departing and returning the same days that Amtrak does, Expedia can get me from Lafayette to L.A. and back with only a total of 12 hours' flight time for the same price. The difference is that price includes first class airfare to and from L.A. and 6 nights in a full suite with a harbor view on the goddamned Queen Mary.
No wonder Amtrak loses money every year. frick a train.

Why would you think they were looking for an amtrak or any commuter train? They were likely talking about hitching a ride on a cargo train in a box car.

I didn't learn this until the other day, but before there was the new Mississippi river bridge, there use to be a ferry that would go back and forth from Port Allen to down town BR.

Used to take the ferry from somewhere south on river road over to Chuck’s and back, from what I recall. Good times.

Asked that a few times on here, no answers. Awesome place, cheap, ice cold beers. From what I remember.

For a significant part of my life, I misheard the lyrics as "an hour from Texarkana" which could make sense. They should've run with that
What song are y'all talking about? Not "Me and Bobby McGee", I hope. No mention of Texarkana in that one, just a mention of "dirty red bandanna"....
