Government Street boom continues - Another bar considers Mid City
LINK
Plans are in the works to turn the long-unused building at the corner of Government and Beverly streets into a new Mid City bar.
The property, near Elsie’s Plate and Pie, is owned by Olga Roquemore, of Baton Rouge. Amy Comeaux with Ritter Maher Architects submitted an application for the property to be rezoned for bar use in late June. Comeaux says Roquemore isn’t planning to disclose any information about her plans until after the Planning Commission meeting, but notes she’s not looking to sell. Roquemore was unable to be reached for comment before this morning’s deadline.
The application notes the rezoning is to “redevelop Government Street frontage.”
That block of Government Street has seen a flurry of redevelopment the past few years. Elsie’s Plate and Pie opened in the former Honeymoon Bungalow building in 2017, and Joshua Duke, co-owner of Olive or Twist, is planning to open an “upscale cocktail bar” next door to Elsie’s this fall. Roquemore’s new bar would be next door to Duke’s.
Further down Government Street, Remi de Matteo is working on opening a “more approachable version of Hayride Scandal” next to Pink Elephant Antiques, and plans are underway for the Taylor Clark Gallery to be turned into a restaurant.
The types of bars that couldn't afford rent on 3rd street are going to migrate towards Government street.

I like that Mid-City is booming, buuuuut we all know what will inevitably happen in a few years.

As rent goes up and the neighborhood residents age, the bars will either shutter or move to another area.
They will be replaced with Chipotle, Jimmy John's, Five Guys, and Starbucks.

“ A more approachable version of Hayride Scandal “? How is Hayride Scandal unapproachable? You walk in and get a great cocktail. Does she mean a buck fiddy cheaper?

I think he means it would be nice to have a bar not next to a hooters and thousands of square feet of unused tenant space.

That's such a weird shopping center. They just let it go to shite. The owners need to fix it up or sell it.

Well that’s a valid point, lol. That said, Hayride is one of the few places I consistently can get a great cocktail around mostly normal human beings.

Having other businesses around helps promote yours. I know they demo'd part of the building it is in. Lock and Key closed because they were re-opening in mid city. I guess they rebranded and decided to wait until the time was right

Restaurant week starts today, and they're the only place that actually creates non-menu dishes for it. They all look FIRE.
On topic, I think a bar in the spot they're talking about would be great. Hopping between there and Radio Bar would make me more likely to make the trek to that part of town. I usually have to be talked into Radio Bar (I say, even though I went Friday night and yesterday...)

I literally said that out loud to myself yesterday. Its not like its a dead part of town either.
The old Melting Pot is still empty as well.

That Mid City will continue to infill develop and increase in value? Because that's what's going to happened. Already has to some extent, but it's still pretty far below it's economic potential.

Radio bar is great because I don't get charged $12 for a cocktail my wife will take a few sips of.

I have friends like that. I have the opposite problem, unfortunately. I have to forcefully slow myself down.

That pie place is overpriced. I could go buy a pot pie from Walmart and pop it in the oven and save like 20 bucks

Good. Now maybe they'll kick that homeless fella of the front stoop. He loves to piss himself.
