I'm just into things like that - I don't want to live them, I probably don't even like them, I just want to see them and experience being among it for a brief period. Anything subcultural when it was arguably authentic.

I wonder how much greenhouse gas this event puts into the atmosphere
But I guess their greenhouse gases are ok, it's mine they have a problem with.

Burning Man Begins
Burning Man 2025 kicked off yesterday, beginning the nine-day gathering in Black Rock Desert, 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada. Its name derives from the week's main event, where a 40-foot-tall wooden man atop a 30-foot structure is set ablaze.
The event, first started in 1986, draws tens of thousands of people annually to a seven-square-mile temporary city in the desert. Attendees, calling themselves “burners,” adhere to 10 community principles, including radical inclusion, self-reliance, and decommodification. Campers can opt to stay in themed villages; vending is banned.
This year’s theme is “Tomorrow Today,” with the venue showcasing tech-forward art installations. More than 70,000 people are estimated to attend, with participants paying a sliding scale of $550 to $3,000 per ticket. The festival did not sell out this year and operated at a loss last year, raising concerns about its financial outlook.

I wonder how many rapes and sexual assaults they're going to bury this year.

Nah, everything has that weird sweet smell of the playa dust. I think it's too dry there for mass BO to really fester.
Not much BO but plenty of playa foot and playa lung. It is not a particularly hospitable location.

I had to look up "decommodificiation", but seeing this definition it's pretty clear that the tech bros and other elites that go there simply cosplay as communists for a few days.
quote:
Decommodification is a process that aims to reduce the influence of the market on various aspects of life, such as housing, healthcare, and social reproduction, by making them available as rights rather than commodities subject to profit-driven exchange. This can involve shifting towards public ownership, social needs-based provision, and democratic control to ensure basic needs are met and to diminish the power of market forces and speculation.

is that a thunderstorm or just a dust storm?

dust storm?
The little ones that rise and fall with the wind arent so bad. The big ones that are 40 miles long and last a few days are not so good.

A few years ago we had a TD memeber who was a Medic working the event.

On September 3, 2017,[41] a 41-year-old man, Aaron Joel Mitchell, fought his way past a safety cordon of volunteers and firefighters and threw himself into the flames of the Man. Mitchell died the next day due to cardiac arrest, bodily shock, and third-degree burns to 97% of his body. His death was ruled a suicide.[42][43][44]

I remember hearing about that. I don't think it was the first time someone did that.
The first suicide was in 2007, though. A guy hung himself in a huge tent and people thought it was just performance art.
First suicide at Burning Man; friends thought it was performance
And then there are the multiple accidental deaths, mostly people getting run over by art cars at night because they weren't wearing any lights.
