My boy died at 8 and our girl at 6. Our girl Frenchie is about to be 10 and we don't have much time left with her. She has a brain tumor. She was in the top 10% of her breed as far as health goes and would have lived longer than most but she got this freaking tumor Our boy Frenchie is four and has been very healthy outside of his stomach issues.
Not exactly refuting the genetic issues thing here.

Breathing problems can be usually fixed with extended soft palate surgery

So here is the point to Bulldogs.
Just like people that love Labs, Boxers, Poodles, etc. Some of us prefer Bulldogs. They have a great temperament, are smart, funny, energetic and are wonderful with kids. People on this thread that keep talking about all of the health issues have more than likely never owned a Bulldog. Do they have issues? Yes. But are you doomed to large pet bills if you choose this breed? No. If you pick a bad breeder, your chances of having health issues go up. If you find a breeder that is experienced and has references, you will be fine. I am on my third Bulldog and for the most part all have been healthy with a couple of exceptions that we decided to take care of.
And finally……when I was at the Mutts parade yesterday, the number of people who came up to us and wanted to pet our boy was unbelievable. And I heard many times over from kids, this is the kind of dog my dad wants.
They are great pets!
Mr Pants!

my little lady has broken the 10 barrier (barely). we could not love an animal more. her personality and genuine love is more then we could have ever asked for. we have been lucky on the cost curve (our historical rescues had higher bills) so i know we should be considered luck

Consider the bulldog. A grotesque monstrosity born of relentless inbreeding. Riddled with sinusitis, crippled by joint pain. Chronically flatulent. A kindly pet, or humanity's cruelest mistake?
as an owner - that may be my favorite 1 minute of television ever. "bring it back here ... look at that hideous face...."

Save as any dog that would be killed by a rat. Nothing

Modern "bulldogs" as in the English Bulldog, is specifically bred for companionship. They are pretty good at that. Original bulldogs looked more like a Scott bloodline American Bulldog. Those are great dogs in their own right. I have had a few Scotts and a couple hybrids over the years. All were very good dogs.
As a rule, almost all dog breeds have some sort of health issues passed down from the original selective breeding to get what we consider "pure blood". Even my current labradoodle can be prone to health issues, but are generally recognized as a healthy breed.

I asked to pet some girl's English Bulldog at petsmart the other day. It was friendly and cute but definitely struggling to breathe like a normal animal.

Got 3 French Bulldogs . 12, 7, and 1.5…. Love the damn things . Puppy is so pretty and 12 yr old is the GOAT. Prolly not much time left with him unfortunately . The two that stay inside are the most loving dogs I have ever owned and I have had many many breeds over the years

It’s like they purposely bred them to have breathing problems

My wife's bulldog is 9 and is a pretty good pet. Bossy as heck though when she wants to be.

I help a bully breed rescue that also includes some working breeds. Usually the big dogs. Once we got a pair of cute little English bulldogs. I think they were English. They were happy, comical and made us laugh. Not fat and slovenly and not quite 1. Both didn have cherry eye so we had that fixed when they were spayed. A lot of energy. They got adopted into great homes.

We have two…. They’re awesome. We also have to F1 labradoodles…. Completely awesome in a totally different way.

I'd argue that pugs are even more useless.
My daughter has a pug…
… dumber than a sack of hammers. Completely pathetic. But she’s house trained, doesn’t mess anything up, and my daughter adores her. So I tolerate it. Having said that, I fully expect on judgment day, God will smite us for what we’ve done to his creation, the wolf.
