re: Building a house: what are some things you don’t like about yours/things to avoid

Went with painted aluminum fascia, and now it’s starting to peel. It was supposed to be vinyl (trashy, I know, but IDGAF).
Originally installed some cheap arse exterior doors around the perimeter. Those have taken some pretty good wear. I’d say if the door is going to be used daily, break out the cash for a good one. I’ve already replaced two of mine.
We have a two story, and I wish I’d have pulled some conduit or something—maybe PVC—from the attic down to the first floor network closet.
Oh, and electrical outlets everywhere. Closets, cubbies, attic. Everywhere. Can’t tell you how many extra outlets I’ve had to pull since we’ve been there. No such thing as too many.

Why fishy? It doesn't scratch, easy to sweep/mop. It's beautiful.

Dont like that you walk right into our dining room area. No foyer.
Would've been nice to have a door from laundry room into master closet.

I would think if you're building in La, shutters on outside that will close would be a great idea. Hurricane is just a matter of time.
Would also get wet room bathrooms. No need for shower curtain or doors.

Did ceramic tile through most of our new house due to mostly the pets. Did pergo in the office and carpet in bedrooms. My favorite part is the paver driveway and pavers up to the front door. The pavers give it the coastal look which I like. My suggestion to OP is don't waste any space in the new house no long areas that nothing goes. I have seen some houses out here that have places that nothing fits so people throw a table or extra furniture.

For me I wan't the living/kitchen/dining all one huge room. The bedrooms and bathrooms can be small if they must in order to make one big room. A small bedroom really isn't that big of deal to me. Just give me room to move around and store my clothes and I'm good. However I could see with a bunch of kids that it would be nice to have a big master bedroom to get away from the chaos.

Ours doesn't have door separating anything after the previous owner remodeled it in 2010. My wife likes older style houses. She absolutely hates the modern style with the garage right in the front.
I picked our first house and she never liked it. She picked this one

I don’t understand these complete open concept homes where there is no division between living room, dining room, and kitchen. We have so many doors and I love it. That allows us to close off all parts of our house. It’s great. But maybe I’m an anomaly.

Love the openness. Grew up in a house built in the 30's, no thanks, nice or not.
