came here to recommend The Vermillion, glad others have already chimed in. For sure you need to head to Padre Island though.

Manuel's in Port Isabel for breakfast. Not an expert about Browntown, but I would also drive to Pharr/Mission to pick up Delia's tamales. They are amazing.

I think that "non-essential" travel (i.e. tourism)between US & Mexico is currently restricted due to COVID.

ya but you can stay on the island over the middle weekend. Also its the absolute best time of year to fish the Laguna Madre. Book a guide and load up on redfish.

A lot of great replies, appreciate it.

Any other good food recommendations?

Also, I've never been across the border, should I check it out?

Go to South Padre. The cartels like to tunnel into Brown Town.

I used to work in Harlingen. Not much to do. There was a golf course that my coworker found that was pretty cool. I don't remember the name. South Padre is whatever. There was a couple decent restaurants.

Other than that, the Jaguar strip club that's full nude and byob was the highlight of my stay there.

Hit up Mr. Taco for some street tacos and frijoles especial. They don't speak a lick of English and it's cash only.

Drive to South Padre to hit the beach or go fishing. Stop at Isabel's Cafe or Manuel's in Port Isabel on the way in for some giant breakfast tacos. Eat lunch on the beach at Cafe on the Beach or Wana Wana's. Sit at one of the bars on the bay and watch the sunset.

The Brownsville Zoo is surprisingly nice. Not sure if you will have kids in tow, but could be worth a stop.

More restaurants - let me think-

802 Cafe - used to have great burgers

Antonio’s Mexican on Paredes Line Blvd - used to have a wonderful lunch buffet

Lucio’s Cafe downtown - not sure if that’s still open

And there was this awesome taco stand by Porter High School - I don’t think it had a name

Also El Pato - it’s fast food Mexican, more authentic than Taco Bell - and the breakfast is great

If Fort Brown still has the buffet, it used to be really good - it’s the first time I remember wearing nice clothes to a buffet

I would go to Mexico if I were you - why not? Stick close to the border and don’t go wander off (we used to wander but this was years ago - I don’t really know how it is over there now) the market used to be nice and - supposedly you need a passport or at least the passport card thing - but even if you just cross and go to Garcia’s it’s worth it

I like Donna, Weslaco, and Los Fresnos school districts.

all as poor of districts as could be and not a pretty part of the valley (if there is such a thing,) but nice dudes.
