They took him off sedation for a while and his vitals stayed the same and didn't improve. Not very knowledgeable with any of this but I'd assume that's at the least good because they didn't worsen??

Prayers to you. I lost my only sibling, my brother and I wish I still had him around every day. Best of luck to you and yours.

MY BIL was in a bad wreck a few years back. He was in a coma, had brain bleeds, a head injury and his lungs were full of water/mud because he was trapped under the vehicle when it flipped on him, trapping him underwater in a ditch and filling his lungs with mud.
We were called in to say our last goodbyes because he was nor expected to make it. He was also on a vent but the good news was that he was taking breaths above the vent (meaning he was taking a few breaths on his own above what the vent was providing).
He was out of it for a long time. Even when he finally awakened, he fought us (common with head injuries) and had to be sedated and was out of it mentally. We fully expected lasting brain damage due to his injuries.
Slowly but surely he started improving and now, years later he is all better and even back to work. It took a long time but he made it.
So you may have a long road ahead of you but each day will bring little victories. Just stay strong, keep the faith and keep talking to him. Another good suggestion is to find his favorite music and play that for him.
Many people in comas can hear and the music can reach parts of his mind that can soothe him and activate parts of his mind that other things cannot reach.
Prayers for your brother and family. It may be a long road ahead of you as he recovers but stay strong and never give up. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Thanks a lot for that share. We haven't thought about playing music but I definitely will each time I get to visit

sounds like a good thing to me...maybe they can get him in to check out his neck and head soon. I would think that if there is damage, they would want to stabilize any of that as soon as possible.

Yeah they are hoping to be able to do the CT scan tonight

Good. That's the test that will give you a lot of answers. Does he have any monitoring of his cranial pressure?
They HAD to have done an initial scan on a trauma like that? Not just stopped at the belly? I say that to say I assume his neck is fine. Structurally he should be good. Just whether swelling occurred after the surgery.
Sorry man that is a WHOLE LOT of hand wringing for you and your family. Remember you may want answers now, but some of these tests need to have few answers, because everything they are looking for right now is bad news. "Negative" tests are good things and no news is good news. It's a cliche, but it applies.

Before I was born my aunt was in a car accident and went into a coma. The doctors told our family in the small chance she survived, it was one in a million she'd be anything more than a vegetable. She woke up 2 weeks later and the only thing she has now is some short term memory loss. Praying for you.
